Yesterday's QB Comparison - Siemian vs. Armstrong

Tommy Gun went 18/29 for 221 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. 12 yards per completion. He also ran for 55 yards on ten carries, and missed a TD on that acrobatic leap by maybe two inches. QB Rating of 78.5 on ESPN's scale (max = 100).

Trevor Siemian went 18/39 for 173 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. 7 yards per completion. He "ran" for -26 yards, and no touchdowns. QB Rating of 26.7 on ESPN's scale.

I know they were going against two very different defenses, but I may have to reevaluate my concern about Tommy's passing. He has TONS to work on, including footwork and hitting short passes with touch, but as an offensive weapon, overall, he's pretty effective.

I'd like to see him run more on the Zone Read. Many of those gives/keeps are predetermined and they need to let Tommy keep it more. The Heisman Campaign needs to take a backseat to the needs of the team, and if we're going to have a running quarterback, he needs to do more running. He's effective in the open field.

 
He can play,sure. It's his decision making that is troublesome. A lot of those zone reads are definitely not predetermined as evidenced by other players frustrations when he keeps on plays he clearly should have pitched.

I know I know game speed and all but still poor decision making at times.

 
Sometimes I just cant get over the completion percentage we hold opposing qbs to. Even in losses, and ugly losses, and in this day of football where 70% is the norm, we just week in and week out hold guys to 50% or below. even the really REALLy good ones.

 
When Armstrong gets his feet set and follows good throwing mechanics, he is a solid passer. The issue seems to be following good mechanics.

Some help from the WRs would be a good thing too. For as little as we throw the ball (comparatively speaking with the rest of college football) there are way too many drops a game.

I didn't know the gives and keeps are pre-determined. That bothers me a little bit. I have been complaining a bit about Tommy not keeping more. I wish he would. I'm not all too sure there isn't some injury concerns with his knee though. I've seen him a bit gimpy a few times this season.
I've been a huge supporter of Armstrong at QB. As he gets more comfortable out there, I think he will show the doubters a few things. Just got to keep working on using some touch and progressing through his targets. With all the shakeups at WR though, it can't be easy to be consistent when there is some inconsistency in who you're playing with. Pierson-El is a huge answer to a lot of our problems. This kid can take a lot of pressure off Tommy if we just utilize him properly.

My buddy and I keep talking about how TA has changed his running style. Go back and look at last year, he ran with conviction and power. Now he looks like TMart out there running like he is scared to get hit. It is almost like the coaches are changing the way he wants to run the ball.

No. Not at all. Not even close. Where in the hell does stuff like this even come from? He doesn't run scared at all. Matter of fact, some of his most impressive runs have involved him lowering the boom. How about the hurdle over the Northwestern player last night? Yea, that's a guy playing scared right there......

This is so far off it's ridiculous.

Fact of the day: That dude passed away from AIDS-related complications... in Omaha, NE, last year. Too bad. Apparently he was a heckuva boxer in real life in his time.

Knapp, good assessment of TA. He had a much better game last night than some of him. Mostly because he didn't turn it over. But his mechanics definitely need work-- I'm going to beat that dead horse into the ground. He really needs work on shorter stuff insofar as consistent footwork and perfecting touch passing.

You're dead on about the Zone Read. That's bothering me a lot too. If we're forcing it to AA for hardware purposes, on that particular play, it's not really doing him any favors. He's going to have no lanes to run through more often than not if the defense doesn't have to respect TA every time we run it. There's definitely something wonky going on with the keep/give tendencies-- either the coaches tell him what to do, or he's very inconsistent at making the correct read.

Good example was last drive of first quarter (IIRC)-- Tommy keeps with a defender knifing in and gets dropped for a loss. I can count numerous other teams it seems like he's got a huge gap off the end and just force feeds it to AA inside for no/little gain. That needs cleaned up.

 
Tommy's run nearly into the end zone in the 4th didn't look scared. Unless you think he ran straight forward at top speed scared. Or that he leapt toward the goal line scared. Or that he extended the ball - giving himself up to a potential big hit in the process - was scared. Or the half-dozen other runs where he lowered his shoulder in previous games were scared.

If by scared we mean running with conviction and trying to get into the end zone, then yes, I agree he runs scared. If that's not what we're talking about....

There have been many games this year where he has ran the read option very very well.

Interestingly, when they go against a better defense, it appears they have to work harder at it and there are more plays that don't work. Amazing how that works.

They are not all pre-determined gives or keeps. Now, I'm sure they have said they want him to gove to Ameer more than keep it. But, to say the coaches are telling him what to do every time in the read option is rediculous.

Agreed. Most of those reads are absolutely not predetermined.

 
Another poor comparison of Tommy, 5 dropped passes and 2 thrown away ; easily could have been 75% or more on completion rate. That does not even consider some poor route running & blocking by the line. Yes, he made some mistakes but no TOs. He is a SO and not Heisman candidate, even though some of you rate him to be.

Some are pre-determined, some are not. It's hard to tell watching the game live but easy to see watching the replays. I haven't gone back and re-watched the NW game yet but I thought he gave several he should have kept against MSU.
