Interesting Stat

NUinID

All-Conference
Looking at the stat line for the NW game on another board. The SOS really caught my eye. NU's schedual is ranked 24th nationally and 1st in the Big 10. NW is 100 nationally and last in the Big 10. Doesn't really mean anything other than NW really hasn't played anyone all that great so far. I was really surprised NU's was that high.

Thoughts?

Where are they getting that SOS? The criteria used is as important as the SOS itself.

Looking at Sagarin ratings, we are 60th in SOS. With just a cursory glance, that is worse than Wisky and tOSU, 41th and 46th, respectively.

I wouldn't say NW has that bad of a schedule. Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Penn St, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan & Michigan St, which are all very decent opponents. I think their non conference games were tougher than ours though.

Just reporting what I read. You forgot BC they are not good and Vandy only has like 1 or 2 wins.

I noticed the SOS stat. Other stats that really stick out are our Rushing defense, net punting and turn over margin.

As for the turn over margin, I know there will be some who instantly start ragging on Martinez and the offense. HOWEVER, the bigger issue is why isn't our defense taking the ball away more often?

As for SOS:

Northwestern's schedule:

Syracuse 2-4

Vanderbilt 2-4

Boston College 1-5

South Dakota 1-5

Indiana 2-4

Penn State 4-2 LOST

Minnesota 4-2

Now, not saying that we didn't play some easy games. But, it is clear that we really don't know how good Northwestern is yet because they really haven't played any good teams yet.

I understand your reporting what you read :)

I was just disagreeing with where you read it from lol. I left BC out of list of decent list btw haha. Either way, it doesn't help our chances on breaking top 25 for BCS. Even if we win out, I would be surprised if we cracked top 20.

A Sagarin guy. :ahhhhhhhh Sagarin does have a unique way of doing things.
Yeah. So unique his formula is included in the BCS.

He's got flaws, but he's been the industry standard the past 15-20 years. I'm not remembering, but there are a few more guys with their own formulas who are making names for themselves in the past few years, using different criteria that Sagarin doesn't include.

Yeah. Syracuse, Vandy, and Indiana are all 2-4, but, as lame as it sounds, they are all pretty decent 2-4 teams. Syracuse has played close games, most notably Rutgers this past weekend; Vandy took SC to the limit and played Florida tough, and Indiana had both OSU and MSU on the ropes. I know it doesn't mean much, but sometimes you have to look a little deeper than just record-deep.

I agree, I was just looking at the stat and thought it was interesting. The eyeball test is always important. I would say that NU's scheduale is as good or better than NW so far. Disregarding Idaho St.

It is a bit telling we are looking at SOS stat lines to provide some peace of mind ahead of NW. As a IA fan pal said after last year's NW game, "Welcome to the B1G! Friggin Northwestern."
