To be fair, I think he was only like the third black guy to play college football, and first in the Midwest. Or something like that.

So it was quite notable in those times.
I know. It just seems incredibly odd, and wrong, to hear (or read) something like that today. But back in the day, when this story was first published, lines like that were common place.

Jesus even in the 60's "colored" was a polite term. Think NAACP. Also notable was they refered to him as a MAN (not a boy).
