Early Creighton Thoughts

A few things at the front of my mind looking forward to the game Thursday. Not expecting a win, but a heck of a lot more optimistic than I was preseason.

-Slow the pace. Nebraska will not beat CU in a shootout, if Nebraska can keep CU in the low 70s the game could get interesting.

-Foul trouble. Nebraska hasn't faced a front court like this yet. What Nebraska is going to have to try and pull off is taking advantage of match ups. Almeida needs to be on the court when CU subs in their string bean back up center Artino.

-Who guards McDermott? Ubel will most likely get charged with the task most of the game. The one game McDermott has struggled this season was against UAB. They were able to get him in foul trouble and ran a lot of different guys at him and were really physical pushing him off the block. I think Tally is strong enough to guard him a bit and Rivers will no doubt get matched up a few times. Guys will need to step up.

-Make Wragge put the ball on the floor. The guy is straight money from beyond the arc. Someone, anyone will need to close on him fast when the ball heads his way.

-Pressure Chatman. He is a quick guy that can hit an open jumper, but has struggled with control from time to time and has gotten benched during key times of some games.

-Sag, then pressure, Gibbs. He doesn't shoot jumpers so there is no need to over pursue when the ball swings to him. Sag when his dribble is alive and pressure him when he picks it up to disrupt his passing lanes.

-Exploit CU's permitter defense. They have a history of letting scoring guards have huge games against them, two guards have had 30+ point games against them already this season. Gallegos is the type of player that can give them trouble.

-Be loud. This is CU's first true road game of the season. Nebraska fans need to be loud and show our guys support.

-And lastly play loose. Nebraska has no pressure to win this game and no one would worry if they lose. Go out there play hard and play confident and they have a shot to pull off the upset.

Good write up! I especially like the point about staying out of foul trouble. That will be key for our bigs.

I think they will play Ubel against McDermit to start and then when we rest one of the bigs it will be Rivers or perhaps even Talley.

12-12-97 is really the day it all changed. The Jays are 11-5 against the Huskers since that game and have won 10 of the last 13 matchups with their instate rival.
That season started a run of 15 straight postseason appearances for the Jays.

Creighton's attendance has skyrocketed to the 6th best in the nation while the Huskers could give away tickets and still not have the Devaney Center at half or three quarters full.

The Jays have had stability with coaches Dana Altman and Greg McDermott.

The Huskers have been searching for a needle in a haystack with Nee, Collier, Sadler and now their hopes fall on Tim Miles.

The Bluejays have had players like Kyle Korver, Nate Funk, Anthony Tolliver and now Doug McDermott.

Mikki Moore and Lue are as good as it gets for the Huskers since '97, and those guys are a generation ago.

Since 1997, Creighton has finished no lower than 4th in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Huskers on the other hand, consistently finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 and now the Big 10.

Listen, I'm not saying Nebraska can't win on Thursday, in fact the Jays haven't won in Lincoln since 2004. What I am saying is that win or lose, Nebraska is a Bluejay state when it comes to basketball and has been for a while.

And when your Husker friends ask you how and when it happened....just say 12-12-97.

There's no way we can't win tomorrow night. As much parity as college football has these days, college basketball has even more. The gaps between talent and between schemes just aren't as big, any team can win any night. Our guys have been playing surprisingly well to start the season, and as was stated before, have nothing to lose going into this game. I expect a good ball game.

I learned my lesson last year to not post during the game. I guess I just don't understand why people can't like both teams when they aren't playing eachother. It makes the state look a lot better when both teams are good. Obviously Im from Omaha and am exposed to Creighton more than Nebraska. I can drive 15 minutes to see them play as opposed to more than an hour to see the Huskers.

Btw, my basketball team is going to be coming to a tourney in Lincoln in a few weeks, I think. We should try to get that beer again while Im there since I bailed on you for Valentines Day last year :)

Remember this from last season? Indiana last year was better than Creighton this year. Just sayin'. . . it could happen. Playing in the Bob is a pretty big home field advantage for us.
