You what i noticed during that play. The guards were further back behind the center and tackles. Kind of like a staggered lineup for the offensive line. Never seen something like that before.
Obviously the two ends backed off into zone and on the outside to prevent Martinez or Burkhead from getting to the perimeter. Sirles missed the opportunity to block #57 Ruechel, as Pensick and Long double teamed on #44 Borland. Choi does a good job picking up Taylor, looked like he was gonna bend him backwards. Qvale does a poor job trying to block #51 Dippel, which causes Burkhead to step up and help out. Ben Cotton was clearly locking onto #11 Gilbert to block, but as Gilbert backed off, Cotton tries to come over and help block Dippel. #92 Muldoon was the other end who ran out to cover Kenny Bell.
Now if Sirles had picked up Ruechel on the block or if Burkhead would have moved over and picked up Ruechel, Taylor would have had enough time to throw to Bell on the flat and have Turner out in front as a lead blocker. As Taylor spins around to shake off Ruechel, he has Dippel in his face. Cotton sees Martinez scramble and decides to run a route parallel with Martinez, at which Taylor runs after him to cover. In the meantime Borland breaks contain from Sirles and Long runs after him to try and block him in the back, thank god the referee didn't see that.
At this point, Martinez is around the 10yd line scrambling for his life, this is what i don't like about the offensive line, the standing around or jogging to where the QB is behind the line of scrimmage. Choi is offscreen, my guess the line of scrimmage on the opposite side of the field that Martinez is running on, the only person over there to block is Muldoon who realizes the ball isn't going to Kenny Bell. While Qvale ran to the other side of the field to also try and block Borland, he now is running back to the left side and try to aid Martinez during his scramble, Long on the other hand is walking back towards the line scrimmage. Also Burkhead is standing between Sirles and Pensick calling for the ball after Martinez shakes Gilbert. Now Choi comes back into the picture sprinting along with Pensick and Sirles to try and get ahead of Martinez to setup some blocks. Martinez cuts between Pensick and Sirles and now has Burkhead in front of him as a lead blocker. You already have Turner and Enunwa on the right side blocking, Burkhead gives a shove block to #12 Southward coming closing in on Martinez and Kenny Bell stays with #14 Cromartie to finish off Taylor's magic (lucky) run.
When i saw it, i was happy for the TD, but was no way happy about the play. I told my friend that i was watching the game with, Huskers got lucky on that play.
