Marrow to Kentucky

Not trying to sound argumentative here, just actually wondering. But why is it that Courtney Love will probably decommit? I know Marrow was a big part of recruiting him, but he is not the LB coach. Why is marrow so important to him?
Recruiting is handled by region, not position. Carl Pelini recruied Taylor Martinez because California was Carl's region.
Agreed. Marrow has pulled in 5 recruits from Ohio.

Not to mention it bears emphasizing again that by recent accounts Garrison was working with the walk-ons.

Overall, our offensive line talent is not impressive. It is not a strength of this team and Beck has done a pretty splendid job working around it.
for as much as we talked about the trenches the last few years - i'm scared to see what it's going to look like next year. we whiffed recruiting the DL, and we whiffed recruiting the OL. but we have receivers and RBs everywhere. can we make some offseason trades?

Amen

PS Some of those Oline recruits were VERY highly thought of recruiting wise. Tyler Moore, Klachko, Hardrick, A-Rod (biggest waste), and I know there are more.. Our o-line talent isn't as awful as you make it sound. Funny how walk-ons are starting over highly rated guys...maybe because the coaching is poor, thus the potential isn't being fulfilled...
More was born a Husker, Klachko is done with football after transferring, A-Rod no clue here, Hardrick was ok. Still wonder what that guy could have done with 4-5 yrs in a D1 weightroom
Hardrick givin 4 full years is scary. Also, he was hampered by multiple injures for at least the 2nd half of the season last year. Sad we didnt have the depth to sub in, but he was always lugging and limpin around. The Michigan St game comes to mind as an instance where he was obviously hurt.

@joshharveyscoutThis Marrow news is so overblown. He was selling Pelini in OH, not himself. It wasn't as if #Nebraska got those guys because of him solely.

@joshharveyscout

(cont.) Nothing will change in the state. Maybe Sandland doesn't come here, but that's it… #Huskers
+1

Also from twitter and goes to that coaching changes were never a real possibility:

Samuel McKewon ‏@swmckewonOWH

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini told me via text that he recommended Vince Marrow for Kentucky job. Said it was "a good opportunity."

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Most of our recruits, besides Antoine and Sandland, never mentioned Marrow in their interviews. Not saying that he didn't help recruit those guys, but Papuchis, Coach Kaz, Joseph, Els and Bo were the selling features to why those kids committed. Defensive wise, why would they decommit because Marrow is leaving? Its not like he would have been the ones coaching them.

I believe Bo knows the capabilites of what we can do next year, and that is solely why he never burned redshirts this year. We "lose" Sandland, thats it. Its not like Nebraska ever had the kid in the bag anyway. Otherwise he would have committed already.

What????

So, the coaching is so bad that "talented" recruits coming out of HS don't see their potential realized but it is good enough for a walk ons are starting in the 8th best rushing offense in the countrya and one is good enough to become an All American.

Does anyone see something odd there?
So, what your saying, is that walk-ons aren't "talented" enough to have starting positions over highly recruited kids? The only thing I see in this, is good coaching. We are also 6th best in Rushing defense, facing 5 top 25 rushing defense schools, which is also most in the nation.

 I'm pointing out the absurdity of complaining that walkons are playing.

I don't know what is the problem with our highly thought of recruits that come in here on the OL. It baffles me. BUT, you can't say our coaching is total crap when we have players who ARE getting better, we have a good running game and we have a walk on who has become an All American.

assuming you mean offense - i'm not going to say our rushing offense isn't great - but I think anyone watching the game knows it's far more about the backfield (and Martinez) than the OL. the other few in the top 10? army, air force, georgia tech, new mexico, navy, nevada, northern illionois, tulsa, etc....

does that mean those schools have dominant offensive lines? nope - means their system and backfield is suited to rush the football. just like ours. our rush offense was middle of the pack when Callahan was here but we were sending linemen to the NFL and playing solid in the trenches. does that mean that Calahans offensive linemen all sucked? it all goes so far beyond the stats - yet you constantly spew this #6 ranking in EVERY SINGLE thread that mentions the OL.

NEWS FLASH: We will be a top 10 rushing team next year. We will be for the next 10 years assuming Beck/Bo are still here. It's not going to change. We can lose 10 games (like Army) and will still probably be in the top 10. That's how Nebraska is set up. Doesn't mean the offensive line is great. Doesn't mean there is talent there. Doesn't mean the coaching is good. Just means we are a team that is going to rush the hell out of the football. And we'll likely always have the talent in the backfield to do it. Been a long time since we haven't.

Still it would have been nice to keep him here. Marrow's words saying that he felt Pelini had the program heading in the right direction was a factor that played in his decision to leave to Nebraska, he felt he could go to Kentucky and help another friend turn around their football program. Classy guy Marrow. Sounds like he didn't make the decision to leave Nebraska for Kentucky, but rather Bo Pelini for Mark Stoops solely to help that program out.

A lot of walk ons/lower rated recruits are more developed and sometimes more dominant in high school than some hire rated recruits. But they don't have the body/potential/athleticism of someone rated higher. A higher rotating means more potential. A lot of linemen can plateau in high school, just because they are bigger and stronger than other people... Granted, still talented, but if you give me A-Rod with Bill Callahan, he might be an all American at this point. Developing talent is our weakness, and OL is often where talent needs to be developed and shaped the most.

So if anything, it reflects more on Cotton that we somehow have an abundance of 2 stars out playing 4/borderline 5 star o linemen. You can't honestly believe we are just THAT lucky to have 2 stars walk on and dominate.

or we're just THAT unfortunate that none of our recruits are able to crack the starting rotation. It's like Cotton developing guys from a 2-7 on a scale of 1-10. 5 spots, pretty good. But what we need is him developing guys from a 6 to an 8 or a 9. Unfortunately all our 6's come in and ride the pine for some reason. They remain 6's so our 7's are playing. Doesn't mean we are at the level we need to be.

Here's how I would rate our positions in 2012.

1. RBs (with Rex healthy)

2. WRs

3. CBs

4. QB

5. TEs

6. DEs

7. Ss

8. OGs

9. C

10. OTs

11. LBs

12. DTs

Regardless of the play, they are one of our weaker units. OGs likely above Safeties. But still bottom half.

This kind of blows, but we will have to see what Bo does with his staff in the offseason. We just need to focus on recruiting hard the next couple months.
