Defense

Well, get ready for more next week. Coz, in all of his brilliance, will more than likely not learn anything from the MU game last year, and be terrified of Meyer running the ball. So, he'll instruct all of his defensive lineman to "contain" Meyer, and thus, we will get no presure. He won't go to a Nickel package with four wide receivers, leaving our Backers' to cover wideouts (a mismatch no matter how you look at it), and ISU will carve us up again for about 400 yards passing.

We'll have to win next week in a shoot out because of Coz's lame defensive schemes.

Joy, Joy, Joy.
So what would you have him do? From what we've seen, our linebackers don't have quite the speed to blitz and get to the quarterback in a three- or five-step drop. If you send them, you leave the middle open.

So far as we know - and none of us do - there isn't a fifth defensive back ready to play. So who do you put in for the nickle or dime packages?

I'd love to see more pressure, but if you send the linebackers, the corners and safeties have to be able to handle man-to-man - and that's doubtful, since even when we blitz we don't seem to get to the quarterback quickly or often enough, leaving him time to pick out the open man. It's our major weakness, and limits what we can do.

Well, first of all, let me start by saying I am NOT a Div I defensive coordinator, nor did I claim to be (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night :thumbs ).

With our defense, specifically our backfield, I would never tell our front four to "contain" (as what is suppose to have happened on Saturday night). They need to go all out to get to the QB so that the DB's have to cover as little time as humanly possible. Because of this fact, I would put a "spy" on Meyer. I don't know if any of our LB's are fast enough to do this, but it definitely would not be Bradley - he seems to take really bad angles (football is less about speed and more about the angle you take to make the tackle). Most likely, this is going to have to be McKeon - he takes excellent angles towards the ball carrier.

I would use Brothers as the Nickel back - yes he has gotten burnt once or twice, but I still maintain he would be better at covering a wideout than one of our LBs.

I would not blitz a ton - due to the exposure to the DB's. However, when I did blitz, I would try to disguise it a little. We don't seem to be doing that. If we can't figure that out, then I'd either bring the house (see OT of KU game) or not blitz at all.

There, my opinion, which that and a quarter may get you a phone call across town.

:yeah

We need pressure or we die. Especially if we are going to stick with Grixby who by the way has become no more than a foot wiping stone. He was burnt more times than an Oregon forest. That was dam sickining. I would like to see the percentage of passes that go his way, how many completions and how many YACs. I'm talking about a veiw based on percentages. I'm betting high 80s. All teams are using him as a saftey net. If nothing else works throw against Grixby. It is not a matter of whether it is a completion anymore it is a matter of how far will the play go. I tence up like seeing a car wreck everytime I see a pass go his way. You either repalece him with no experience (which I don't believe will be any worse) or you find a way to get pressure. IMO you do both. Status quo is not working..........

Of course my butt is not on the line and I'm not loosing my job over it but we need a corner not a door mat.

What would be wrong with using the same gameplan as last year? They brought all kinds of blitzes on Meyer last year and harrassed him. We have the same personnel this year. And the secondary? We started Grixby and Green at corners that game, Bullocks was legit, but is Shanle really any different from Tiedtke? Bring the pain on the Clones!

I think that we should use Green as our nickle back and move Thenarse or Young in there at safety when we have five dbs out there. Green is used to covering people plus wasn't he our nickle back at the end of last year when we won three straight?

Carriker...1 sack? 1 sack for our combined starting three LBs? Maybe it was the gameplan against KU to defend the shovel pass, I don't know. Maybe there are more sacks to come. If you think about it, LaTech game was very vanilla on D, Nichols ran the ball every play, USC is USC, Troy we got some sacks against undersized linemen, and KU had a lot of experience up front. I really think our LB depth is hurting us right now with Octavien and Dillard out. We basically have 4 guys with the starters are Brandenburgh in there. I don't know but some of these guys better start picking it up by next week because if you give Meyer time to pass I think we all know who he will find. Overall, we need better play out of our D or this season could end up being a disapointment.
That's exactly what it was. In the OWH this morning Cosgrove confessed the D held back because the shovel pass had been so productive in previous games averaging 30 yds a play. Personally I don't think coaching in fear is a good gameplan.

I don't understand that logic. So defending the shovel pass was the game plan and letting a running back get wide open whenever he wanted was ok? That doesn't make much sense to me. A first down is a first down and it was open all night and they marched right down the field almost everytime they had the ball.
That's why Coz is an idiot. :steam

This whole holding back because of this shovel pass crap is B.S.!!!! We need to get pressure on the QB so he doesn't have time to pick our secondary apart!!!! Everyone knows we have a weak secondary and I guarantee you that ISU knows that..............This next weeks game is going to come down to a race of offenses IMO.......................We will win it because we have more threats on offense than they do, but our defense is going to need to get pressure on Meyer and our linebackers are going to have to spy him because he will run on them if they don't!!!!!
It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario, though.

If you bring the blitz, with a secondary that can't cover man-on-man consistently, you'd better get to the quarterback - otherwise, he's going to light us up. In particular, the short middle of the field is wide open.

If you try to protect the secondary by dropping linebackers, then you can't blitz.

The former can lead to really big plays - both by the defense and the offense. The latter at least makes an offense have to march down the field, increasing the chances that they will make a mistake at some point.
Pressuring the QB early seemed to work well in the 1st quarter. Barmann was pressured and he threw two INT's right off the bat. That should have turned a light on somewhere: bring the heat. I think if Barmann would have been pressured ALL night long, he wouldn't have had the time to throw downfield and it would have disrupted his timing (and mentality). The more we backed off the more confident he became.

I don't think that our game plan from last year will work as well this year. I think we are weaker at corner (Jones is improving - so we may be ok, but we still don't have a nickel back, which was Bowman last year at this time). I think we are weaker at defensive tackle; however, we are seeing steady improvement here and should be up to last year quickly. And finally, I think we are weaker at safety - but once again, steadily improving.

Just my humble opinion.

The secondary is getting better, but the cusion that the guys are giving them is horrible. They were 10-15 yards off the wr. Get up there and jam the wr and let the linebackers blitz and hit the qb in the mouth.

Yeah, that's what I offered for the SC game. I think Elmo doesn't like to get away from their "approach". I guess that approach means to play off the WRs and let them run free.

I don't know if our corners are strong enough to jam the recievers at the line. With the secondary that we have now, I would much rather run a bend but don't break defense.

Miss the jam, or don't do it properly, and you're giving up a quick six. I'm with Gamecocks - with the secondary we have and the seemingly inability for the blitzers to consistently get to the quarterback, the best bet is a bend-but-don't-break scheme.

I can see what your saying AR and your right either way you leave something open for the offense to exploit..........were just going to have to hope our offense comes out clicking on all 8 so we can make ISU chase us all night..........

Knock the Qb on his a$$!!! I dont care who or why, just do it. It will change the complexion of the game off top. Why?? The qb will have that on his mind the rest of the game. Remember when Turner knocked troy's Qb down. he didnt play the same the rest of the game. I was on the 50 yard line, trust me he was shook. Whatever happened to using Turner in with Carriker and Moore??? The interior Dl are good going North and south but East and West they are slow. We need speed in there. Insert Turner. He is by far faster than any other Dl we have. That means more pressure to the Qb but also more closing speed on a RB or qb. There definitely should be a LB roaming the middle. Please give Grixby some help. One of the safeties should be more closer in on whatever side Grixby on. After the USC game, he was really exposed as the weakest link. We are the Blackshirts :box be the agressor not conservative .
