Octavien set to return

No. 2 weakside linebacker Steve Octavien, who has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, is set to return to action this week, Bill Callahan said Monday.

Backup strongside linebacker Clayton Sievers also may return this week, though Callahan said he would have a better idea about Sievers’ status come Tuesday.

Linebacker depth obviously is a concern, one of many on defense following the Kansas game.

Asked if there was anything specifically that troubled him about his defense, Callahan said, “I’d just like to get better. I’d like to get better fundamentally. I’d like to see our techniques improve. I’d like to see every facet of our team defense get better.

“It’s team defense. It’s everybody. It’s not just one area, one guy, one position. Everybody has to get better.”

Same goes for the offense, especially considering the stretch Nebraska faces this month. After this week’s trip to Ames, the Huskers play road games at Kansas State and Oklahoma State sandwiched around a home game against Texas.

“I mentioned to the team again yesterday in the squad room that these next few games are crucial,” Callahan said. “In the Big 12, if you’re going to be in contention, you have to win key road games. You have to compete like crazy. These are huge games. You have to take a road mentality with you.”

That is great that we will get Steve O back along with Seivers. What ever happened to Nick Covey? I thought that he would be getting some reps this year, but must be further behind than I thought.

Thank god! After seeing him last year against Maine, :restore then him going down was a heart breaker. I cant wait to see him back on the field.

I'd like to see him blow up a few plays when he's on the field. That's be swell.

Good to hear he's back, whether he shines or not. I'm sure after watching the tape, the LB's will see some plays where they were kind of standing around here and there, late to the ball, etc.

I believe they will all respond and be ready to stick it to ISU.

GBR!!!

I think I remember reading an article that said Covey tore his ACL in preseason. Could be wrong though.

The only problem I have with BC's comment is when he said they weren't fundamentally sound. All the starting lbs are 2 or 3 yr starters (jr & sr). Have they not learned the fundamentals in 3 years or did they just not show it during the game. The ends are the same way, been around quite a while. I can see why the db's are struggling and may not be fundamentally sound. All new starters with the exception of Grix who gets physically beat. All I'm saying is do the players not know the fundamentals, or did they just not show it in the game.

Thanks for the reply about Covey, I had not heard that. As far as the team not being sound fundamentally, I have no idea if that was a one game thing with lack of concentration or if they just have never been sound at it.

We need speed at LB desperately. Welcome back Steve. Damn it, stay healthy.
Amen. If nothing else, he should revitalize the blitz. He's one of the guys that has the speed and physical ability to get to the quarterback quickly, and in a bad frame of mind...
