Big difference between whoopin your child and beating your child. If you dont have the common sense to know that difference, then you should not have the privilege of having a child. My kids get whooped every now and then.

i understand the difference. i do not think the lack of spanking is what has caused the current problem of narcissist. i think that stems from parents either not caring or coddling their kids their entire lives. i think this cartoon portrays the second part:

I can vouch for the same thing at the college level.... I would say that it's more a case of children that are never allowed to grow up...

Except, all hell hasn't broke loose. The idea that the younger generation is worse than we were is a myth that has been circulating for thousands of years.
The difference is we live in an age where we can get on YouTube and see first-hand how sh**ty and cruel children can be.

Just to stand up for us "older generation" people; I don't remember spanking my son after he was out of diapers(couple years ago 
) .
He knew there were consequences to him making bad choices that he knew were wrong. Whose standards: mine. Now he has higher standards than I do. He graduated HS with a 4.4 GPA taking AP classes, Student ASB Prez, and outstanding Student of the Year his senior year. While playing football, soccer and track. He paid his own way through college (UA, meh). He has a great wife and kids, good job.
Is he a normal part of the "younger generation" or outside the norm? Oh yes, his mother and I were divorced when he was 7, so yes there is a crutch he could have used but didn't.
He has seen disappointment: didn't qualify for being a Naval Aviator(eyesight) so he chose another profession. He has known heartbreak when losing a girlfriend he loved. All without crying "poor me".
I believe every generation has been able to persevere through hardship even though they may have been perceived as "worthless, long haired hippies". Oh wait, wrong generation

I know you do. I wasnt suggesting that, or that the lack of is responsible for current issues. i do not have a problem with spanking, either. parents should be feared. i just do not think it will be my style. something my wife and i talk about because her dad would give her and her brothers a wallop if they acted up. he was a scary man to begin with. raised incredible kids, though.
my grandma complains of the baby boomers moving into her retirement community because they are less willing to volunteer, which is apparently an important aspect of her community. it seems that generation is a little selfish and entitled and we are seeing the ramifications of that in their children, notwithstanding myself.

Eventually you learn. When I graduated from HS in 94, I thought the world would be handed to me on a silver platter, just put life on auto pilot and by the time I'm 30 life will be easy. I was internally arrogant, I thought I was smarter, better, deeper, better versed in all subjects, and just all around a genius at everything, than those around me, in fact I was an idiot.
As I failed, I blamed others, screamed it wasn't fair, not my fault etc. It wasn't until my early 20's that I stopped blaming others, a few more to start taking blame, and even more to stop being envious of what others had. My journey is far from unique, I think most 18 year old's tend to be optimistic, arrogant, narcissistic, and self absorbed, some learn quickly and adapt, other (like me) need a few blows to the head to start thinking right. This study is probably accurate, but in the end most of these kids will be fine.
For the record, my parents were not to blame for my attitude. They held me responsible for my grades, punished me for acting out in class etc. I was just a stubborn little s%^t.
