B1G Expansion and more Conference Realignment

Incidentally, here are the Top 50 TV markets in the newly-expanded B1G footprint:

1 - New York

3 - Chicago

4 - Philadelphia

9 - Washington DC

11 - Detroit

15 - Minneapolis/St. Paul

17 - Cleveland/Akron

23 - Pittsburgh

25 - Indianapolis

26 - Baltimore

32 - Columbus, OH

34 - Cincinnati

35 - Milwaukee

39 - Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek

41 - Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York

You'll notice that the most recent expansion (Rutgers/Maryland) added markets 1, 9 and 26. North Carolina would add 24 (Charlotte) and 27 (Raleigh/Durham).

 
No one is comparing Kansas to Duke in basketball(although Kansas hasn't exactly been a slouch).

Just looking at the criteria for expansion, Kansas hits on pretty much every piece while Duke is hit and miss.

I think Kansas would do fine and contribute. They wouldn't be a leach.

The SEC thought that Mizzou wasn't a leach. Kansas is about the same as Mizzou in appeal.

3. Flagship University

4. Top Research school

5. New markets

6. academics

7. athletics

On the flip side, Duke draws better than Kansas in NE (and probably outside of the Midwest in general), which will probably help gain traction in DC & NYC.

I'm not excited about either school, but I think the Kansas vs Duke argument is pretty even.

Duke might be hanging out with some Midwest and East Coast schools in a new conference(it's at least being discussed at Duke)

This Midwest/East Coast conference has nothing to do with the Big Ten though...

Kansas has been to a BCS bowl. More recent that a certain school in Lincoln, at any rate. :hmmph

A decent football (and good basketball) conference could be cobbled together with the quality parts of the MAC, C-USA, and the ACC/Big East castaways...

So has Cincinnati, Northern Illinois & Wake Forest. That doesn't mean anyone is begging for them to join eit...wait what side of this argument am I on?

 
Looking at this from another perspective:

With Duke's national brand, and so many b-ball games, they would possibly add a ton of content to the BTN, strengthening its appeal as a national product. That might open more cable companies to put it on basic tier, and could trump any downside from Duke's poor football rep.

A lot of if's, I know, but thinking from a BTN first angle, it makes some sense.

Very good news for recruiting.

tons of talent(particularly top talent) in the state.
