Sometimes our kids feel like, 'Wow! Football is tough and it's difficult.' Football is hard. But when you compare it to what a 7-year-old like Jack is going through, it pales in comparison.

This was a moment, that even a fanbase as passionate as NU's realizes in the grand scheme of things football is a trivial matter.

 
everyone says that this 'puts things into perspective' or 'trivializes the game', but i disagree. i know football has its place, in the grand scheme it is not that important at all. i have always known that. that is why i love letting myself get so involved, because it is fun, but ultimately not that important.

but that moment during the spring game elevated football and the university. that moment demonstrated why football is important. it is important as a distraction, as something to put your mind to so you can have a momentary escape. something where you can put your hope and live with the highs and lows and feel great emotion with the wins and loses and then forget about it on monday. i like to think that jack and his family get to have husker saturdays where that is all they have to think about. and it is a relief, even if for just an afternoon.

but more importantly, it elevated the game because it shows how great the game can be. it demonstrated how the sport is still about the fans, all of them. it conveyed that we love this game because it brings us together. all of us. from chadron to omaha and beyond, across the nation. and in a time of an individual's and his family's great tribulation, we can come together for a greater purpose and a greater good. because he is a symbol of all of that, jack is the hero. eradicating pediatric cancer is the cause.

seeing the whole team rally around jack after his touchdown was pretty special. rarely do we get to see such a genuine and meaningful moment. but that is why we love the game and our team. when it is good, it is the best.
