Combatting the "We Aren't Relevant" Argument

I think you're reaching. Where's the buzz? We're ranked but big deal.

Team Jack isn't the Husker football team.

Agree that the buzz isn't relevant to much right now. Just an interesting thing I noticed. We'll have plenty of national buzz if we keep winning.

I mean, we're no Alabama. We're no Ohio State either. I get frustrated when I see people spewing drivel about how we're an afterthought, and I want to pull that extreme thinking back center. Schools like Indiana, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Kansas are afterthoughts. I have just proven that to myself because it took me a while to come up with examples.

We aren't where we want to be, but we're not playing by ourselves in a muddy ditch either.

We fit that definition no better and no worse than about 25 other teams. Evidence can be found here, here, here, here, here, here and here, as a few examples.
Right. Did you think I was making a different point?
I don't think you'll see too many fans chanting "We're Number 22!! We're Number 22!!"

Arizona, Nevada, San Jose State, etc have players on the Heisman Watch list. Not a great indicator of "relevance", unless you want to compare us to those football powers:

All I can do is point you to the national news writers, and ask you where their hype surrounding this team is. It's nonexistent. Nobody outside Nebraska is hyped about this team, our coach or our stars. Being on watch lists containing dozens of players doesn't mean anything.

Not by itself, but you have to take into context the entire package man.

We haven't made a splash recruiting in years.
This is where you'd be wrong Knap.
Nope. Show me where the recruiting world was abuzz with the neat class Nebraska signed. The best class ranking we've had in years was this year at #17, and nobody outside Nebraska talked about it.
As petty as it sounds, according to scout we were 11th last year and according to rivals we were 15th in 2011. So again, you'd be wrong.

Team Jack is a great story, but it isn't the football program.

We have a 2nd team pre-season All-American. One. So does Maryland.

We have a player on the "watch list" for the Heisman, so does Maryland.

We are not ranked in the SI preseason Top 25. Neither is Maryland.

So we are Maryland?

You know who has 2 preseason All-Americans? BAYLOR.

Relevant in the college football "world"? Yes. We still get a lot of mention due to our history.

Relevant in the elite or MNC race? No.

That can all change though.

Still not wrong. Where were the "Wow! Look at Nebraska's recruiting class" articles? Who, nationally, paid any attention to our class?

Big-time classes get big-time coverage. We weren't, and we didn't.

I get that this is a Husker message board and that we're all Husker fans. But this attempt to make more out of our recruiting classes and relative relevance is a big stretch.

We're a non-factor in everyone's minds outside the borders of this state. It's not evil to admit this.

Where are any articles stating "wow look at this recruiting class" outside of the SEC programs? And usually those are for programs like Ole Miss who go from having a dumpster fire season to somehow having a top 5 recruiting class.

North Carolina is #9 in merchandise sales. Kansas is #17. Wasn't that one of your criteria? Is it not valid for other teams?

One of my examples (not really criteria), yes.

The merchandise numbers are for the entire schools also. Kansas and NC obviously get a lot of attention because of their relevancy (lol relevant) in basketball.

I think you are mixing the arguments or we have a different definition of "splash." And its unfortunate that all I can tell you is to wait and see. With the product offensively we put on the field last season, its okay to admit that we recruited that side of the ball extremely well the past four years. Unfortunately, all I can tell you is wait and see this year on defense. I'd love to revisit this in November.

Here's one from today

Factor in the perfect storm of Braxton Miller's ascension at quarterback, Meyer's consecutive top-five recruiting classes and another extremely favorable schedule and we've reached a point where CBS' season preview show last weekend actually had the Buckeyes No. 1, ahead of Alabama.

You certainly don't see any mention of our recruiting classes when writers attempt to justify our position within the conference, or give reasoning behind why we should win the conference.

To be perfectly honest, the fact there is an article mentioning Nebraska as a "darkhorse" for the National Championship tells us all we need to know about Nebraska's relevance.
