Next game - Bye week, then @ Nebraska
The Bruins trounced Nevada, 58-20 in their season opener. Brett Hundley threw for 274 yards and two TDs and added another 63 yards and two TDs on the ground. UCLA led 17-13 at halftime, but scored three times in the third quarter to blow the game open. Jordan James ran for 155 yards and a TD. Nevada QB Cody Fajardo ran for 105 yards and two TDs in an otherwise forgettable offensive effort from the Wolf Pack.0
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE: 1-0
Last game - defeated Butler
Next game - @ North Dakota
The D1AA Jackrabbits made quick work of Butler, 55-14. Butler QB Matt Lancaster threw for 174 yards, no TDs and an INT, and led the Bulldogs with 64 yards rushing and a TD in the loss. Jackrabbits QB Austin Sumner threw for 326 yards and 3 TDs, while RB Zach Zenner ran for 117 yards and two TDs.
ILLINOIS: 1-0
Last game - defeated Southern Illinois
Next game - Cincinnati
The Illini survived a late comeback attempt by Southern Illinois to win 42-34 behind 416 yards by Nathan Scheelhaase (28/36, 2TD, 1INT). The Illini led 42-24 with 13 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter until Southern's Kory Faulkner led a late charge. Faulkner finished with 312 yards and 3 TDs through the air. No RB for either team ran for more than 50 yards.
PURDUE: 0-1
Last game - lost @ Cincinatti
Next game - Indiana State
Purdue will be Nebraska's first road trip of the season and it's looking like the the Boilermakers won't pose too many problems (presuming Nebraska actually comes to play, unlike against Wyoming). Cincinnati demolished Purdue 42-7 behind a balanced rushing attack that saw four Bearcats score TDs. Cincy was led by Hosey Williams' 70 rushing yards, but three RBs had 50 or more yards. Purdue earned 226 total yards in the loss.
MINNESOTA: 1-0
Last game - defeated UNLV
Next game - @ New Mexico State
The Golden Gophers only led UNLV 16-13 at halftime, but exploded in the second half to coast to a comfortable 51-23 victory. UNLV outgained Minnesota 419 yards to 320, and overall Minnesota's offensive numbers are pretty pedestrian. Sophomore QB Phillip Nelson threw for a paltry 99 yards on 10-22 passing, and was also Minnesota's top rusher with 83 yards. Odd game.
NORTHWESTERN: 1-0
Last game - defeated Cal
Next game - Syracuse
Northwestern beat Cal 44-20 on the road thanks to an INT return for a TD midway through the fourth quarter. The other NU led by just three until LB Collin Ellis ran back a Jared Goff INT for a TD to put the Wildcats up by ten. Cal could manage just a FG after that and the Wildcats tacked on a late TD to seal the game. NW QB Trevor Siemian threw for 276 yards but was unimpressive, going 18/29 with 1 TD and 2 INTs. Kain Colter was largely a non-factor, completing one pass for 23 yards, one rush for six yards and zero receptions in the game.
MICHIGAN: 1-0
Last game - defeated Central Michigan
Next game - Notre Dame
The Wolverines looked the part of the Legends Division favorite, dismantling Central Michigan 56-6 in their home opener. Devin Gardner went 10/15 for 162 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs, adding two more TDs on the ground and 56 yards rushing. Fitz Toussaint and Derrick Green had nearly identical numbers, rushing for 57 and 58 yards, respectively. Toussaint added two TDs while Green had one.
MICHIGAN STATE: 1-0
Last game - Defeated Western Michigan
Next game - South Florida
The Sparty offense looked predictably anemic this week, defeating Western Michigan 26-13 behind a lackluster performance by Andrew Maxwell, who went 11/21 for 74 yards and 0 TDs. The quarterback controversy in East Lansing figures to continue as Maxwell's understudy, Connor Cook, was equally ineffective throwing for 6/16 for 42 yards, no TDs. The only offensive player to score a TD for Sparty was RB Jeremy Langford, who paced the MSU offense with 94 rushing yards and 1 TD. Sparty was bailed out in this game by their defense, who scored two TDs to outscore the Sparty offense.
PENN STATE:
Last game - defeated Syracuse
Next game - Eastern Michigan
The Christian Hackenberg era began with a bang at Penn State as the true Freshman led the Nittany Lions to a 23-17 victory, throwing for 278 yards on 22/31, for two TDs and two INTs. Zach Zwinak paced PSU with 61 yards rushing on 24 attempts, while the Nittany Lion defense held Syracuse to 260 total yards.
IOWA:
Last game - lost to Northern Illinois
Next game - Missouri State
Oh, Iowa. Finding ever-more new and creative ways to lose. The Hawkeyes ganked another one under Kirk Ferentz, in a lackluster effort that saw new QB Jake Ruddock go 21/37, 256 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT. Iowa got an even 100 yards on the ground from RB Jordan Lynch, but in the end it wasn't enough as Northern Illinois intercepted a Ruddock pass and returned it to the Iowa 30 with 1:24 left in the 4th Quarter. From there NIU rushed for another 11 yards, then kicked the game-winning field goal with ten seconds to play.
