However- yep our defensive performance in the SDSU game looks pretty dumpster firish. NDSU totally shut SDSU down

Transitive property is my favorite math rule. NDSU/SDSU is a huge rivalry game for the Bison second only to the Fighting Sioux.

Problem is, it wasn't just one bad quarter. Not sure where you two are getting your numbers from. Especially in the Wyoming game and UCLA game. It was more than one quarter in each of those. UCLA started having their way with us at the end of the second quarter and completely owned us the 3rd and fourth. Wyoming statistically and visually had our number for almost the entire four quarters. That's only discussing he two games this season out of only four we've played. We need not remind ourselves of the games last season.

Geez, we shouldn't even have to discuss how sad this defense has been. I thought it was a foregone conclusion. The entire world knows it, but apparently here at Huskerboard........

I am only talking about the SDSU game. Your right about the other games, but I lay equal blame on the offense in those games.

Should have been at a minimum 40-21 but they have to throw the ball against Wyoming.

You just can't go 3 and out back to back to back.

 
I like how this thread is more about both NDSU and SDSU than Illinois now.

I like looking at stats, but you should know as well as I do that the overall stats don't tell the whole story. It is fair to evaluate a defensive performance differently given how and when they allowed the stats they allowed. A defense which surrenders 500 yards, 245 of which came in one quarter should be evaluated differently than a defense that allowed 500 yards of which 125 yards of it came in each quarter.

So, I took a look at the drives against our defense by Wyoming, Southern Miss, UCLA, and South Dakota State as well as the overall yards and points allowed. Big Plays are runs that went for 10 or more yards and passes that went for 15 or more yards.

Wyoming

1st Quarter:

133 yards (22.1%), 7 points (20.6%), 21 plays = 6.33 yards per play (-1.8) | Big Plays = 2 (9.5%), 50 yards (37.6%) | Adjusted = 19 plays, 83 yards = 4.37 YPP

2nd Quarter:

Not to ask you to go back and do even more work BBXII, but I'm curious -- what about the yards-per-play figures for each quarter? I think that's a more interesting measure generally, than simply yards.

I don't know--you're partially right and I'm partially right. SDSU and Wyoming definitely lean your way, but UCLA leans my way. We'll split the difference.

 
South Dakota State had 227 yards rushing against us, -32 against North Dakota State......I know they are good but not that good damn.

Illinois beat an FCS team by 8, lost by 10 to a team ranked #18, and blew out Cincy and Miami (OH).

We squeaked by a good mediocre MWC team by 3, lost by 20 to a team ranked #16, and blew out an FCS team and Southern Miss.

My gut says we're going to win easily because "we're Nebraska the they're Illinois." But I don't think that someone looking at the game without that kind of baggage would expect Nebraska to win in a blowout. Unfortunately, this should be a good game.

Are you assuming that college defenses normally give up (or offenses normally get) around the same number of yards and points in each quarter of any particular game?

 
Oh, definitely that's not the case, but something like this presents a slightly less macro story of the game as it unfolds, compared to just total game stats. We can see, for example, that the defense totally gave way to Wyoming late in the game, at the worst time. UCLA we opened up very impressively and then they turned it around and kicked our asses in the second half. SDSU was never stuffed, but held (comparatively) in check compared with a pretty rough start to the game.
