EZE had a very good post last week about teams running zone read when they spread out in 10 personnel ( 1 back and no Tight Ends)
He said that NU was staying in their base 1 High Safety look and moving the LBs out into coverage, or changing personell so we are left with just 1 LB in the box.
Well early on from about maybe the 9-10 min mark of the first quarter until about midway through the 3rd quarter Illinois exploited NU just the way EZE described last week.
The play was there for the taking and they were getting 7-8 yards on the base zone and zone read out of that alignment. The DBs and LBs would be run off, the safeties were staying in their 2 high look and then it was either 5 hats on 5 bodies or when they ran the read, 5 hats of 4 bodies, because you leave the backside DE unblocked. So they were able to get a double team on the playside DE and then a hat on a hat- our best defender double teamed.
Once the adjustment was made of bringing a safety up, they stopped running it.
Every team we play from here on out will try to get us to align the same way.
It begs the question, are we really that weak in our coverage that we cant put the right number of defenders in the box on spread plays? Or is Bo so worried about deep passes that he is willing to get gashed on runs when teams spread us out like that? Does he not trust our secondary?
