What do you think the impact is of 11am games on Lincoln?

I guess I have never really seen numbers of how much the bars pull in but I would have to guess that a lot of the bars on O street could almost make their entire year off of the 7-8 home games. Much like Paulies in Omaha used to do during the CWS.

Now, with a lot of 11am games, how big of a negative impact is that? Anyone work at the bars or have friends that work there?

I would think that they don't get packed until after 10am and lets face it, if they lose, it clears out, just like the UCLA game this year.

So, just for the sake of using numbers, if Bar A makes 10,000 dollars on a Husker game that starts at 2:30 or later, what would it make for a game that starts at 11am?

Not as much an impact as we think it is. 11 AM games mean heading to tailgates/bars AFTER the game. I would wager that a 230 start is the "worst" time for bar revenues.

Really? See, I would have thought 2:30 might actually be what the bars hope for. You get the crowd that gets in a 10am and stays until kickoff and you still get a crowd that stops in after, while the traffic dies down. That was just my thought.

I think most people (myself anyway) prefer pre-game partying rather than post-game partying, so that would give more business to the bars before the game. Thus, the later the game time, the better the opportunity for the bars.

Yeah, you can think that "I will want to hang out and party after the game", but the weather might be bad, or the game turned out to be a loss or boring game, and after the game, you just want to get home, and not spend too much time at the bars.

Which probably means that the BIGGER impact on the bars is how the team is doing.

I was having this discussion with they owner of Callahan's a couple weeks ago. For those of you not living in KC, Callahan's is probably one of the bigger Husker draws. The 11am games have a huge impact on him, as most of his customers aren't the typical drunken college kid that will start at 10am. So rather than drinking for 2 hours before the game, then through the game like people do for the 2:30 slot (you have to get there really early to get a seat), they'll come in at 10:45, drink water/tea for a couple of hours then drink the 2nd half.

11:00 game, he'll be full from 10:45 - 2:30ish. 2:30 game, he's full from 11:00 (normal lunch crowd), until 6:00, with the game falling in the middle there.

Another thing he talked about was the impact of the B1G move on his business. He said those pay-per-view games were gold for him. Losing those has taken a % as well.

As far as partying goes the 11:00 AM kickoff does effect how much money I spend and how much I drink. For example I went to the Illinois game got to Lincoln, parked and to the Dock behind the Embassy Suites at about 9:00. There was maybe 50 people there when I got there when it is usually packed. Drank a few bloody marys and went to the game. After the game when and had a couple of beers down by the new arena and then left cause I needed to be back in Valley by about 5:00. Even If I didn't have to get back early I most likely would have only stayed another hour or so longer.

For me it is mostly a logistic thing. I just can't get up and get the game that early when I am in town. It is not me, but usually it is getting the other people I am going with to get moving.

A 2:30 start time would be preferable to me as far as tail gaiting/ bar hopping goes.

NUinID I think you nailed a big part of it, the "getting other people" going part. You have your die hards that are getting to Lincoln at 7 or 8am regardless.

Now, in my case, getting people to party in Lincoln for the 11am game means trying to leave Omaha at 7, well, that is not happening. Chances are that it will be closer to 8:30 which means we will park and be walking to the bars by 9:30ish. That really is only about an hour to drink before either heading into the game OR finding a place to watch the game, which means little or no bar hopping. I know not everyone bar hops but if I have the time, I like to hit a few of them before the game. With the 11am start, it makes it a bit harder.

Worry more about the impact of 11am games on recruiting. Kids aren't playing Friday night then making it here for a Saturday morning game. As far as Lincoln goes I'd guess you see less tailgating and more postgame bar action.

I heard that the diffence between Nebraska winning and losing is about 1 million dollars to the Lincoln business community.
