Jared Afalava Out this weekend

No idea. But thats a position we couldn't afford to drop one, even though he's young. We can't have Santos out there. No one should be surprised if we drop this game to a pissed off Northwestern. Fitz is going to do anything and everything to escape with a win due to their current situation. They are going to bring up the tapes from Wisconsin, as will everyone now this year. They've finally realized we cannot stop the jet sweep.

Just got done re-watching the first half of the Minnesota game. We actually made a great adjustment against the jet sweep that I've always wondered why more teams don't do - blitz into the motion. When we saw a guy come in motion, our "nickel" corner (usually Ciante) would come off his man and come hard upfield into the motion. Problem was, they still had a blocker for him but he always took out the blocker in the backfield. The problem was, our LBs were so terribly slow reacting (usually Santos) that it didn't help to blow up the path in the backfield because they still had time to run around and pick up yardage. Even the one time they faked the sweep and the QB ran for 25 yards, they would have made as many (or more) yards on the handoff but our help was so slow in getting there that the QB even had time to fake, run forward then bounce to the outside and run. I hate to bag on specific players but Santos really can't be out there. I like what I've seen from Rose as I think he attacks better and that should help a lot. Even being where you're supposed to be one step quicker can turn a 30 yard run into a 1 yard gain.

As to Afalava, he was pretty slow reacting as well. Not sure what the deal is but I think Rose, Gerry and Anderson are our best trio right now. Gerry doesn't always do things exactly right but he's doing it at full speed which makes up for a lot.

Blasphemy! We do not adjust, and specifically not against the jet sweep. Kidding. Our LBs are struggling. I linked an article in another thread from Barrett Ruud where he discusses the issues the LBs are having.

Watching the Wiscy game from last year as well, you'll notice that on the first time they ran it, Stafford makes the perfect read and PJ is even pointing across to him. Stafford is in position to make the tackle in the backfield and doesn't do it.

Exactly. You can see Stafford working toward the line as he sees the motion coming but repeatedly takes terrible angles. We've done even more now by blitzing into the motion but Minny had an extra blocker there to pick it up.

The thing Wisconsin did as well was use Ball as a decoy and the whole OL blocked as if he was getting the ball. Really good play call and game planning. I really think they wanted to make Stafford tackle. He had that play sniffed out and blew it.

I think I read that Rose is switching places with Santos so maybe that will be an advantage? Don't you also think that many times we lose ground/sacrifice points simply because our players aren't playing their positions? On Big Red Wrap Up this week, Blake Lawrence showed that to be oh so true!! Blah!!

That's what Bo has said on several occasions but people don't like to believe that.

It happens because they are young and the reads and run fits really take time to get a feel for. It really is that simple. That is why I started the topic about Roach and how he may of helped with his knowledge in the linebacker corps this year.

Inexperienced players make mistakes, they can do it right 5x in a row and then for some reason do it wrong. When I coached I saw it all the time.
