International Man of Mystery
One week from today Nebraska will celebrate Senior Day during their eighth and final home game of 2013. The game will be Nebraska's 333rd straight sold-out game. During that legendary streak, 24,967,343 fans have filed through the gates of Memorial Stadium.
On Friday, November 29th, the 32,657th fan to enter the stadium will mark another milestone - they will be the 25 millionth fan to watch a game since the streak started 51 years ago.
I've heard no word from the University about this milestone. Perhaps they won't celebrate it at all, but I think it's pretty cool. Some notable dates along the way:
11/3/1962 - beginning of the streak
10/15/1966 - streak attendance tops 1 million
10/2/1971 - 50th consecutive sellout
10/25/1975 - streak attendance tops 5 million
9/29/1979 - 100th consecutive sellout
9/27/1986 - streak attendance tops 10 million
9/12/1987 - 150th consecutive sellout
10/29/1994 - 200th consecutive sellout
9/28/1996 - streak attendance tops 15 million
9/7/2002 - 250th consecutive sellout
11/12/2005 - streak attendance tops 20 million
9/26/2009 - 300th consecutive sellout
11/29/2013 - streak attendance tops 25 million
Streak attendance by decade:
1960s - 2,628,592
1970s - 4,887,203
1980s - 4,877,398
1990s - 4,876,536
2000s - 5,865,920
2010s - 1,831,694
Record by decade:
1960s - 38-8
1970s - 56-9
1980s - 58-6
1990s - 62-2
2000s - 56-16
2010s - 18-3
Nebraska has gone undefeated at home in 20 of those 51 seasons. In the 1990s, the only two teams to defeat Nebraska at home were Washington (9/21/91, 36-21) and Texas (10/31/98, 20-16). In the interim between those two losses, Nebraska won 47 straight home games.
So if you've got tickets for next Friday, you may just be fan number 25,000,000 to watch a game during the streak.
