Hits vs Tackles

IMHO the defense that Nebraska is putting on the field lacks any real semblance of fundamental tackling. Arm tackling, head behind the runner, no wrap up, no leg drive. It seems to me that this defense is waiting for the runner to come to them and trying to absorb the blow rather than going forward and delivering the blow. And there is very little wrap up going on. Even in the NFL, where everyone on Defense looks like their only goal is to make the next version of NFL Crunch Course, big hits don't usually stop good runners.

So, being 6 and 3, one has to ask if the lack of defensive fundamentals is perhaps the reason they have 3 Ls?

In any event-----> :bonez :bonez :bonez

Again OCTO swing pass to texas TE he blew the dude up. 2 plays later QB draw oops McCoy meet OCTO. he can flat lay the wood but he wont play much because hes not as fundamental as ruud. the great defenses of the past had a lot of playmakers. if one was out of position there were 10 others to step up and make the play, today if OCTO is out of position noone is there to step up and make a play. you are right about the tackling lack of fundamentals = lack of coaching IMO

at this point i actually believe its because he isn't at 100% health-wise.... Earlier in the season he wasn't as fundamentally sound, but i think he is much closer now. Ruud seems timid at times, which isn't the mentality a LB needs.... SteveO and Mckeon both sat for Misery, so i am thinking we will see a good bunch of them for aTm, and they should be PUMPED

I think we are missing both hits and tackles. First of all, we are missing way too many tackles. There have been several instances per game where we have a guy or 2 in the backfield ready to make a tfl and the runner gets by him for a 1 or 2 yard gain. It is still a good defensive play, but not as good as it could have been had the tackle been made. The opponents always seem to fall forward when we tackle them. This brings me to the fact that I haven't seen very many hits this season. Maybe 2 or 3 all year. Those big hits can be a momentum changer and get the D riled up whilst striking fear in the opponents.

I can't answer why we haven't seen the hits: fundamentals?, technique?, attitude?, athleticism?, make your own determination.

I'd say Brandenburgh is the best tackler on the team but he was definately playing timid with the cast on against MU.

There is a blatant lack of tackling fundamentals and that does fall on the coaches.

I guess if you forget the years folks said the same thing about McBride as you say about Cosgrove.

The idea that coaches that have a job at this level don't know how to show a kid how to tackle is assinine. Forget that, kids at this level who don't know fundamental tackling shouldn't be playing at this level.

I agree that the coaches should have that ability. Yet are they stressing those fundamentals in practice the last few weeks after such abysmal performances? Before taking those steps forward with the new game plans they need to be working on the basics and build from there.

Your thought, while seemingly logical and correct, actually begs the question. If the coaches know how to coach, and the kids should be displaying those fundamental, then why aren't we seeing better tackling.

I'm not tryin to bust your chops or anything but, if what you say is right, and I think it is, it is still a mystery why we aren't seeing better tackling.

I agree with you 100% timid might be and understatement on ruuds part though... i think aTm is gunna get ate up by octo amd mckeon this weekend! at least hope so.. as long as coz has a scheme setup for them to be successfull
