Playoffs vs. BCS your thoughts and opinions

I for one am in favor of a 16 team playoff.

1. 10 conference winners (acc, big east, pac10, big 10, big 12, sec, mountain west, wac, conference USA, and the Mac)

2. 6 at large based on the 6 highest ranked teams not conference champions

a. Independent teams like ND have to be at large.

3. Use the current bowls as host sites that takes up 15 bowls

4. use a format 1 vs. 16 2 vs. 15 etc

I know there will be a lot of comments involving the conference champions but if you dont include those conferences then lets make them D1AA and move on. If we call them D1 then they must be included.

All conferences must be the same championship game or no championship game

The polls must be uniform in terms of dropping spots I.E. if you lose to a top 10 team you drop 3 spots automatically. If you lose to an 11-20 team you drop 4 spots automatically etc. You cant be ranked behind a team you beat if your record is the same.

what are your thoughts

 
I like the idea, but I don't like the uniform dropping in the polls. It takes away the common sense that is needed in the polls. That is my biggest complaint about the BCS. There is no common sense element needed in place of stupid computer polls that one has Ohio State rated number 6.

 
i agree but common sense will never happen thats why the uniform drop is needed. When FSU or Nu or teams like that were in there hayday they get preferential treatment. not fair but it happens that is why it is needed. If we didnt have uniformity it would get worse in my scenario because i think people would do whatever to keep ND in the hunt for example

 
16 is too many.

It really comes down to only 3- MAYBE 4 teams at the end of the year that are clearly ahead of everyone else.

I say, keep the BCS around, and take the plus-1 and turn it into the plus 3 or something.

Let the bowls and conferences still jockey for each other, but have requirements for the final playoff spots. Like a ranking of at least .750 and no more than 1 loss. Maybe require that a team be confernce champ or co-champ.

It might be variable fromyear to year how many teams get in - like one year it's three teams, another year, maybe five teams. That probably wouldn;t be appealing to the networks, so make it a standard 4. But maintain that a team is a conf. champ, and has no more than one loss.

 
Get the 16 team playoff, and the rest go to bowl games. I say this because bowls are a reward for a decent season, you take away the bowl games and it doesn't seem like college football anymore. With no bowls it'd be too nfl'ish just my .02

 
I hear ya bornred but every year half of all D1 teams go to a bowl. doesnt that take the prestige out of it. it shold be a reward for a decent season. the bowls are a part of football but maybe make it 7 win minimumb with wins vs D1AA not counting. there are way too many teams happy to get 6 wins and be bowl eligible. this year 6-6 gets you a bowl YUCK

 
with all of the corporate money getting throw into the bowl picture i dont think that the NCAA will ever get rid of some sort of the BCS. There will be constant tweaking to the system but i am afraid that it is in for the long run.

we may not like it but i think that it is here for awhile

 
Well if you put the minimum at seven wins to get into bowls. There are going to be a lot less big nonconference matchups. Teams are not going to want to sacrifice a bowl game and an extra month of practice to play a big nonconference game. Plus, by limiting the bowls, it takes away from the money that conferences would bring in by having one or two teams from big conference not make it to a bowl.

 
good point gamecocks. I think there should be some criteria set forth that requires a BCS type team to play at least 1 maybe 2 other BCS conference teams every year. for example Boise St gets no love nor should they so there is no need to play them. require NU to play an indian or a Mississippi St every year or both for that matter.

The bottom tier bowls lose money. they are always changing sponsors and half fill the stands by giving away tickets. being able to have the extra month of practice should be earned not given to half of all D1 teams

 
I think however it is decided...playoff or current system, there is going to be some team getting the shaft. With the amount of games that football plays it is tough....I am leaning towards the playoff, but that might take away some out of conference games and I am not sure that is what I want to happen. It is obvious that the BCS is a HUGE joke, but it might be the best thing that than can logistically do at this time.

 
I would love to see a 16 team playoff other than the BCS, but does anyone think they will ever get away from all of the revenue that cities where the bowl games are played bring in, and do away with all of the money that schools get for going to a certain bowl?

 
Maybe not if they start in mid-December and spread it out over the course of several weeks and hype each individual game just as much as they do each bowl.

Maybe all the round-one games could still have most of the bowl game rules, titles, benefits, etc., and then we eliminate from there.

16 teams is too many. It really comes down to only 3 or 4 clear contenders at the end of the season.

It also takes away the importance of regular season games and bering a conf. champion.
