Red zone defense?!

What was it that the Huskers were doing to keep Georgia out of the endzone so may times?

Or what did Georgia not do to get in the endzone only one time in six trips?

My uneducated guess is.....

All game, really the only thing they were having success at was the RB and TE passes underneath. This was partly by design because our defenses goal was a) stop the run.....did that well and b) take away the long passing game....did that well too.

So, that left us vulnerable underneath. Georgia did a good job exploiting that. However, when you get into the red zone and have much less field to defend, our defense could cover the RB and TE also.

I think it was all by design and it worked well.

The only really consistant success Ga had was their screen on the TE defender that allowed him to get open. I remember Ed saying once it looked almost illegal the way they were doing it but I'd have to see the replay again. Otherwise our DB's had their receivers well covered. The D line did a good job stuffing the run. Obviously we wouldn't have had as much success if the Ga team wasn't so hampered by injuries with players performing at less than full health.

They were running the pick play over and over. It is very frustrating that this is hardly ever flagged,

My question is, how do you defend the pick play. To me, it looks like the defender can't win.

A lot of times we will switch on picks but I didn't see any of that yesterday. Might have been the defenders involved. Or we might have decided not to do it to try to prevent a blown coverage.

We were still running a match-up zone from what I saw. The problem with their pick plays was that they came after the initial routes are started and everyone on defense takes their man in their area.

The part of your post that pisses me off the most is that it is hardly flagged and we don't seem to incorporate rub/pick plays of our own. I like the shallow crossing ones that also incorporate the official as a possible picker!
