This isn't really fair. Not saying they haven't been a liability, but you can't just lump entire seasons together like that and ignore the times that they weren't a liability.

i mentioned that they have been a liability since 2011. the way i read that is that they have been a concern and at times have caused losses (i.e., before 2011 they were the strength the team was building around, after 2011 they were not a strength and were hit and miss). i am sorry i did not do a game by game breakdown, but you seem to be misunderstanding my use of liability. just because something is a liability does not mean it is never good, just that it increased the chances of something bad happening.

I certainly see where you're going and it's possible. At least the trend would be solidly upward. Now there's plenty to support that it's stagnant, or even dropping. I also think (in your hypothetical) the first couple of years would have been VERY rough for him. He might be coaching Miami after your 9 win, 3rd season.

Like others said, we often look to 2009 as the proof that this D can be something huge. Bo bought himself a lot of credit with that defense. Because of that, despite what some may think he can still say that "he hasn't forgotten how to coach defense". Take that away, and you take away 1 of the 2 most common arguments in support of Bo. The other being "he's one of only a few coaches to have won 9 games in the last X number of years" - or however that one goes. Without those two, you're just left with "can't fire a 9 win coach", and I'm not sure that's enough without those first few successful seasons.

The problem arises when those expectations get in the way of perspective and you start axing coaches for the most absurd of reasons. We were spoiled in the 90's. Then we had one little ugly run to end '01, '02, '03 appeared to be heading back in the right direction. But it wasnt good enough. At least that's the perception. Now what we've had over the past 6 years isnt good enough. Obviously. No arguments about that. But in my opinion 9 and 10 whens is not even close to bad enough or reason enough to reset and start over. Regardless of how the losses or wins look. That's MY opinion. And that I think you've let your expections get in the way of perspective.

No one's happy about where we are. But guys like me feel it's in the best interest to stay the course and keep trying to progress. Guys like you feel it's reason enough to start over. Neither is right. Niether is wrong. But neither is "insane" either.

They aren't dependable, aren't consistent, etc. I'd say they've been a liability for this team for the last few years. We've had to scheme around the lack of talent. I'm sure it's impacted the way the offense was coached.

But re: the rest of the bold: I think that's the most frustrating part about BP's tenure here so far, he hasn't done anything on the field to earn a longer stay but he hasn't done on the field to earn a trip out of Lincoln either. A 12-2 season or even a 6-6 season would provide a clearer picture.

Actually Schnellenberger was not fired but quit. At the time, he was an alcoholic, drunk as a skunk.

To tell you the truth, I was kinda comfortable 7-6 Pelini's record without Bo's embarrassing antics, on and off the field.
