If you had the colors of Kansas State (great football team with a great team name), this wouldn't be an issue for the bi-annual games in Evanston--and the more the merrier.

The coach apologized and said he would "own" the mistake, but that he meant no harm by it. Fitzgerald said he was trying to compliment Nebraska fans on how well they travel. The visitors overtook a large portion of Ryan Field in 2012 as the Huskers came from behind to beat the Wildcats 29-28.

Nebraska visits Northwestern on Oct. 18.

"Our fans need to step up," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said Northwestern lost track of what it valued last year. Got back to it this spring.

For a guy who many would like to see here, a comment like this from a sitting Nebraska coach would be met with much hand-wringing.
