Battle for the Carries that AA Leaves Behind

I'm interested to see what - if anything - we find out as the season draws near. I'm guessing Cross, Newby and Taylor will get pretty even looks through camp and into the first few games. But perhaps someone will seize the opportunity.

Terrell Newby made the weight room a focus in the summer and it shows. He weighs 197. He looks quite formidable. #Huskers

I expect Abdullah to remain healthy, but if he were to miss any time with injuries it will be interesting to see who will step up and be the man behind the man. It was Rex's injury in 2012 that allowed Ameer to showcase the abilities that he carried into 2013.

I am not hoping or saying Ameer will get hurt, but things can happen.

Hopefully we get to see a good steady dose of AA along with meaningful time for the others as well. Screw their desired 50/50, I would rather see a dominate running games that is 60/40 to 65/35. If we can do that we will be controlling TOP and the pace of the game, lots more valuable imo than simply being 50/50.

It's on the others behind AA to prove they deserve not just carries but meaning full ones. Pass protection is a major factor in the others getting meaningful game reps. If everyone is getting it done when they get their chance then we have one of the best problems in football. As we all know, Bo is gonna ride the one he trusts so it'd be nice if a couple guys behind AA proved they are trustworthy.

Need to increase diamond formation. Like 80% time. AA-Cross-Newby at the same time. Substitute: Adam Taylor. Or else wishbone.

Good idea huh?

I'm interested to see more of Adam Taylor coming off his RS year. The guy is the real deal. I'm guessing he'll emerge as our next goto I-back.

The best split I've seen in recent years is last year's Wyoming game.

Abdullah - 19 carries

Cross - 13

Martinez - 16

Newby - 15

63 rushing attempts to 22 passing attempts. Just about perfect. Martinez's 16 (or so, depending on sacks) carries could easily be split between Armstrong and Taylor. Obviously it's not going to be exactly the same on a game-to-game basis, but that could be - should be the general blueprint.

If only every team we played had a Top-3 Worst Rushing Defense.

lol. I'm not sure I'd use the Wyoming game as a model.

For defense and overall game week preparation? Certainly not. For a sensible running back timeshare? Absolutely.

Agreed. Actually I'm all for spreading around the carries. Heck, I'd even like to see us use the #2 QB for a series or so each game. Of course it's easy for me to say something like that being an armchair coach posting on an internet message board. lol
