Battle for the Carries that AA Leaves Behind

I think he averages about 15-20 in the non-con, with a normal load against Miami and Fresno St. I don't see how he can get near the 2K he wants to shoot for without a moderate to normal load for 1/3 of the season.
"...the fans are shooting for" - i'm not sure it makes much of a different to AA or the coaches. I just can't see them risking him early in the season unless we aren't as good as we should be. Knock the rust off, give him some game experience - but I think anything more than 60-70 carries going into MSU is too many. Then against MSU, give him the ball 30 times and let him pound this sh!t out of them.

I am hoping that we just have two healthy running backs towards the end of the season. The Big 10 seems to be more of a meat grinder than any other conference.

AA has flat out stated 2K as one of his big goals this year. He wants to chase it.

This came from Michael Bruntz at 247Sports, Adam Taylor got carted off the field after "what looked like" an ankle injury during today's scrimmage. No idea what condition he is in. Bo had no updates after practice.

this, the hell with personal goal, team wins should rule!

Random thought on the IB's

Was just thinking about Rex's and Helu's careers compared to Ameer's and I got stuck remembering the loss at OSU 2 years ago. I remembered the goaline/short yardage play where Rex was the QB with Ameer as the IB and Rex would take the snap, pitch the ball quickly to an accelerating Ameer and then run into the gap as the lead blocker. It worked great and I remember thinking how slick that play was allowing for an extra lineman to block instead of having the actual QB and then the FB and IB.

I am thinking that this would be a great play to dust off and run, but with Cross under center and as the lead blocker. Not sure how good his hands are, though he catches the option pitch well and has a great work ethic so I am sure he would put extra work in to master it.

Sounds like Newby could make the kind of jump AA did between his frosh and soph seasons. Excited to see what he and Taylor bring to the table, Would like to see us moving guys around some and playing with formations to get them on the field more together.
This is a tricky situation. Ameer made his "jump" because Burkhead got hurt. So unless he gets hurt, I am not sure Newby will make the same jump. Not with a potential Heisman campaign on the line.
he'll get his shot early in the season. I don't expect AA to get more than 12-15 carries in any of the first 5 weeks.
I am not sure I agree here. IMO, he will get 12-15 carries against Miami and possibly Fresno State.
guys we are missing a huge piece here and that is Imani Cross. i expect him to suck up almost every carry Ameer doesn't get. dude could start at 55 of 65 big 5 conference schools. Thunder And Lightning this year with Ameer an Imani. i personally expect to see them on the field together in a lot of situations this year. so much versatility is brought to the field with Ameer, Imani, Kenny, Cethan Carter, Tommy, and Westerkamp. Throw some situational guys in there like Jamal Turner, Newby, and a big long guy like Tarriq allen or Zo Moore

Imani will get his carries but Newby will get at least as many touches as Cross does. Possibly not as many carries but many more receptions. it was Taylor that was more of a threat to eat into Imani's touches but that's down the road a bit more now.

Sounds like Newby is still slowed by an injury as well. I don't think I've seen what it is but he hasn't practiced fully for several days.

Also saw another report saying how much Newby had improved since last year. I think we feed the ball to AA early and often but it will be interesting to see what they have cooked up for Newby.

This little tidbit from Beck was the best thing I could have heard about him this offseason:

Brian Christopherson@HuskerExtraBC 34m
Terrell Newby was held out of practice but it appears they're just being cautious. Beck praised the sophomore for his "patient running."
It's no secret how explosive he can be, but those opportunities to make explosive runs will dramatically increase if he demonstrates more patience than he did last season. Not too surprising for a freshman to get a little ahead of himself at times.

With him, Abdullah, and Cross I think we're pretty much loaded at the position.
