Why didn't we see more of Cross?

Cross played a lot with the first team, he just didn't get a lot of carries. Newby took the carries with the reserves, no surprises. Shockingly, I think we might be reading too much into things.

No? Here? At Huskerboard? I never.

So, let's compare one 2014 game of Tommy Armstrong at QB to Taylor Martinez's entire career. That should lead to more logical and civil conversation.

Ameer and Newby are talented backs, but I am another huge Imani supporter. I think there should be room for 5-10 cross carries a game, especially since Nebraska has never lost a game when Imani had four or more carries.

Did anyone notice Braylon Heard popped off two TD runs 40+ and 70+ for Kentucky?

Bo answered why, he wasn't paying attention to Cross.

–You’ll be able to expect more touches for running back Imani Cross, Pelini said Thursday. The junior only carried the ball three times last Saturday, but saw some valuable snaps, Pelini said. He said he didn’t really notice until seeing the stat sheet.

“It seemed when he was in, we were throwing the football for whatever reason,” Pelini said. “I saw him break through the middle in the first half, and didn’t really realize.”

Who is the feature back in 2015 Newby or Cross? Ignoring the other backups for now.
Newby, and I don't think it is as close as some people would like to believe. Newby is going to be very, very good. Did you see Ameer say after the game (somewhat sarcastically) that he needs to hurry up and get out of here before Newby takes his spot?

Nothing against Cross, but our offense is built for Newby (and, I'd say I'd have to somewhat agree with the gentleman who said Newby is a more complete back FOR OUR OFFENSE, than Cross - we don't have to scrap certain formations/plays for Newby because he has edge to edge speed, but we also can't run up the middle with Newby like we can Cross - but outside zone is bigger in our playbook than IMANI SMASH MIDDLE). Newby is better with screens, tosses, etc. Not to say Cross ISNT a complete back and not very good in his own right (he has worked his a$$ off and gotten faster and more agile), but there is a reason Newby was a highly, highly coveted RB out of high school (who is most likely going to pan out very, very well).

I'd be fine with them splitting time, but I think you'll see Newby as the feature back and Cross/Taylor sharing reps behind him.

that's bullsh#t.........Pelini knew damn well who was running the ball.....Cross will save our a$$ a time or two this season.

I pretty much agree with this. I think we see a lot more 2 RB formations next year with Cross taking most of the inside runs, and Newby taking most of the outside runs. Cross won't be a fullback in the traditional sense, but he'll be sort of used like one. Think of how we used the outside run to soften things up in the middle for the fullback in the Osborne days.

As some have said, Newby is much better. I like Cross and he definitely has a place. He is plenty good enough to be in the rotation and give the top guy spells. But he doesn't have the agility and ability to make people miss to make him good enough to be a number 1.

Beck said at the breakfast today that they knew what Cross could do and wanted to get more of a look at Newby. Take that for what it's worth....

I would say there is truth to that. He also said the reason they wanted more of a look is to see how he'd handle a big workload.

I have it on the most excellent authority that Cross cannot cut laterally at all....so obviously, all other backs are better.
Not all backs are better. He's better than Dan Alexander with agility IMO. But you are right on the lateral cuts. It's why we can't use him as much. Our offensive blocking scheme much of the time is set up for cut backs after reading blocks. He just can't do that very well. I love the guy though. If all of our guys learn and imitate his and Ameer's work ethic it will pay off huge.

Oh no, that was a tongue in cheek comment. He's totally able to make lateral cuts and he's going to surprise a lot of people...if not this year, next year. I find people's lack of faith in him as a running back VERY disturbing and I bet he uses it as fuel for his fire.
Cross is a lot better than given credit for IMO. People site the safety as an example of his "lack of lateral moves", but I think if we looked at all of the Huskers, past and present, we could find issues with their performance. Cross is a beast and IMO, will earn his keep and then some down the stretch. He picked up his blocks well and seemed to look faster when getting through the line and two the next level.

Bottom line, NU has a problem A LOT of other teams would like to have and that is 3 backs who could start. I think there would be a "drop off" with AA out, but we would still be in good shape.

I have it on even more excellent authority that your football knowledge is based off of the videogame series that you share a name with.
