However, an offensive player is permitted to line up less than five yards from the sidelines on the same side as his team's player bench, provided he is not in front of the designated bench area."

Seems like a play you'd see in a Pop Warner game. Not surprised it's illegal.

I don't think it should be illegal. That's just the NFL taking something out of the game because they're control freaks

 
They should have done it Peyton Manning style.

He used to pull off that direct snap to the RB by walking toward the sideline like he was disgusted with the play. If the Browns would have done it right, they would have had Manziel just walk toward the sideline like he was in motion as a WR.
