You can't blame it on the Defense

Bad secondary and turnovers are the reason's we lost the game..............if Zac doesn't throw 3 picks the game is ours IMO..............
I am of the same opionion. I also got frustrated by the amount of time Zach held the ball. I never could figure out it OU's secondary was just that good or Zach was frustrated and could not see the open receivers. Everytime he dropped back for a pass, it gave me a heart attack.
OU's secondary was that good - at least, better than the receivers. The receivers never seemed to consistently get good separtation from the OU defensive backs, which means Taylor had no where to go with the pass - hell, they were even covering the hot read most of the time.

I can't blame Zac at all - I'd rather he hold it and take the sack then force it and throw an interception. The way the OU secondary played, had Zac tried to force it we'd be sitting here today looking at a six interception game...
They did, however, drop a couple possible interceptions...........

You guys kill me. How you can watch a game that Paul Thompson… yes Paul Thompson shreds are defense for close to 300 yards and two td’s and then say “well we played good defense”. We only gave up 14 points because Paul Thompson sucks

does anybody remember the average pass yardage given up buy the NC teams? how many times did NU absolutley shut down the run but still give up 250+ yards passing, but won the game?

turnovers killed us in this game, but guess what? it is over, time to move on and get prepared for the Cotton Bowl

I can say that because OU was averaging 188.67 rush yds per game. We held them to 42. The front seven did there job amazingly well. Like I said, we have DBack issues. OU had 265 yards against us and averaged 182 per game. OU scored on a long 66 yard pass play that was given up by Grixby. Oklahoma's only sustained drive was a 10-play, 99-yard drive. This is when we surrendered a 35-yard completion to Jermal Greshman on third-and-10 (from the 1 yard line). OU ended the drive with a three-yard TD pass. Thompson hooked up with Kelly on 10 of the 19 completions. Kelly produced 142 receiving yards, including a 66-yard catch (Grixby was covering him). Thompson had 142 against Grixby and 123 yards against the rest of the defense. Other than the part of the defense everybody knows is weak (Grixby), the rest of the D played EXCEPTIONAL.

Well we blitzed on their long touchdown pass as well as their 36 yard gain from the one/half yard line.
Where was Shanle on that tD throw? They had been throwing to Kelly all day. Grix was getting toasted all day. Maybe a little help?
Shanle was suppose to have a running back on that play. Once he saw that the running back was staying into block, he turned and tried to help deep but was too late. Shanle does not have help over the top coverage on every play. We are only allowed to have 11 guys out on the field, I don't see how some you guys expect us to blitz every play as well as play man to man on the recievers with help over the top by the safeties. There is just not enough players to go around.

I just wanted to thank you for helping me prove my point. Like so many of us have said already Grixby is not going to bench himself, the coaching staff makes those decisions. I don’t remember anyone talking about our excellent offensive performance in the game. We all know the offence was off, but defending Cosgrove for coming up with half a game plan for one game this year. I don't know.

You actually did not say anything about Coz on the post that I responded to (although you may have earlier in another post), nor did I defend him. I am not a fan of his, never have been. I have been praying that they would sit Grixby all year. I realize that Grixby is part of the defense, but if we could filter out that one part, the D really did play well.

Okay, so the defense ONLY gave up 14 points…SO! When it counted…when it really counted…Cosgrove didn’t have the nads to run the play he needed to run. You are correct, you cannot blitz and double cover at the same time, but you can man up at the line of scrimmage and send the house (remember the `95 Blackshirts against Florida?). You can show them an all out blitz at the line of scrimmage and back out of it, which would have forced Thomson to audible out of play action. You could get us out of that weak-a$$ worthless zone Cos is so in love with. There are a lot of positive things you can do with 11 guys. How about getting the young talent ready to play so that all of you will quit complaining about Grixby. Hey, Grixby may suck…so then riddle me this batman… WHY THE HELL IS HE STILL IN THE GAME? Cosgrove sucks and until that part of the equation is fixed our defense will suck. When they needed a stop on 3rd and 10 from the half-foot line, they couldn’t do it. That may have been the only real big drive of the game, but it was all OU needed to take us out of it. From then on it was Zac trying to play catch-up. Unlike us, when OU’s defense got us to be one dimensional, they killed us. Sometimes I don’t even know if Cosgrove is watching the game.

I think all the blame is on coz, everybody is saying that we only gave up 14 points and how we great we were at stopping the run. Sure we stopped a few run plays but they never had to try to run the ball because we gave up 10 yards a pass. All year long we’ve made every quarterback we’ve faced look like All-Americans. We don’t put enough pressure on the passer with the blitz we don’t use any nickel packages. we’re constantly guarding WR with LB and playing players out of position. It’s not Grixby’s fault, he plays hard every play. If he isn’t good enough and there is no one on the team by this time in the season better then it’s all coaching.
You are absolutely correct. Come on everyone…it was freakin’ Thompson. When he needed to he lit our D up like a Christmas tree. And 951 has it right, they ran when they needed to, and passed when they needed to. I am not into moral victories. We may have only given up 14 points but most of the night we looked pathetic. It was embarrassing. And by the way, if Grixby is such a problem, then why does the braintrust have him in there. The coaches are responsible for the meltdown that this team seems to go through on a pretty regular basis (USC, Kansas, OSU, A&M, and OU). That is coaching. If the boys are talented enough to hang for part of the game, and even dominate, then the meltdown can only be attributed to scheme or preparation, or both. Coaching, coaching, coaching, coaching, coaching!!!

Ha, but lest you forget. There is no real footbal logic that goes into this. Hell, if I can see it from my couch and the stat sheet says so, there is a problem. Forget this 11 player detail stuff. :sarcasm

Seriously I'd laugh if I read some of this stuff as a coach. I wonder how truely out of touch a lot of fans are when it comes to what it take to actually play and coach the game. No, your pee-wee equipment manager job doesn't count.

Seriously, I am pretty sure the Callahan haters have sort of moved on to hating Coz this year. It's comical. OMG COACHING!!! I am pretty sure the coach they are looking for could make me an all american middle linebacker. I mean, anything less would be a dissapointment would it not?

Look at Charlie. He was a dumbass in the early 90's, then him and the staff start getting guys they had missed out on in the past and OMG HE'S A GENIUS. When really, all along, they'd been doing the same. damn. thing. But let's not talk about that. At this point, we only remember the good times in the 90's.

Just one question.

Why not sit Cortney for just one series and see what happens?

Ricky's redshirt is already wasted.

:dunno

You guys are totally right, these coz haters are an absolute joke. If they would use some simple football logic instead of trying to coach from their pee-wee equipment manager job, then they would know that the best way to cover a wide receiver is with a linebacker, silly guys. Or how about the ones who think its dumb to take your best defensive player make up a nifty new name for him like “strong side end” and the line him up on the tight-end side in constant double teams. Then there’s the dumbest ones of all, the guys who think that coaches are the ones who recruit and choose the players that are out on the field, can you believe these guys think you shouldn’t blame 19 and 20 year old kids for a entire teams inconsistent and miserable pass defense.

And I’ve never been a Callahan hater, in fact the only thing I hate about Callahan is that he hired Cosgrove.

That was the best post here on the subject. Nice going 951. I am starting to think that you know almost as much about football as I do. You certainly know more than the rest of these yahoos!
