The fact he knew about it preserving a national championship means that it was told to him at one point....so yes I'm still positive that your history lesson is being taught in some capacity.

Thats just it. Give them the opportunity to understand anyway. And really they should care as they will be an important part of it for the years they are there and beyond.
One thing I've learned in coaching. The examples we use to get a point across usually becomes a "yawn" moment for the kids. Kids these days are way different than the ones that grew up in the 80's and 90's

 
Too much focus on the past is what got us into this mess. You are only as good as your next performance. What happened decades ago is not "yours". Go make your own history on the field of play.
