Disappointed with all the negativity

It shouldn't have to be stated but the negativity is ugly, counter productive, and completely contrary to the 'Nebraska Way'.

There is a huge upgrade in coaching talent of Riley's crew over that of Bo's crew.

NU fans were sold on a false premise and delusions of grandeur - we are all guilty. Reality says there was never anyone else in play yet we all wanted to believe that if it wasn't Tressel, it'd be Patterson, if not him then someone else from a common list of A-list names.

Well the reality of it Riley gives us what we are looking for in terms of both coaching ability as well as national respect and attention.

A poster on HuskerMax wrote a great post on the issue of Riley's coaching strategy and philosophy. It should be mandatory reading for ALL fans. I will post the link (if that is allowed). That sounds great, hope we can do all that.........still don't get why the obsession with positive and negative fans? Our attitude will follow what we see on the field. Do you think we should keep a positive attitude if we lose 3 of the first 6 games? Do you think my attitude will cause us to win all those games? We didn't hire the guy, had nothing to do with the decision.....why is our attitude so important? Personally I like the guy and it sounds like he knows a thing or two. Are donors bailing? Could you clue us in why newbs with 10 posts keep showing up lecturing us on our attitude?

I must be reading most of the posts wrong or just hitting the wrong topics. Other than some initial reactions, I haven't seen much that I would say is negative. I think there is a lot of dialog (mostly constructive) and some folks are more pragmatic than others. Since "the firing", very few have been voicing anything approaching not supporting DONU.

I like the pragmatic dialog going on right now. Like others, I have done research and unlike some, I have been able to speak directly with a few of Riley's former players from OSU. It's much easier to level-set expectations and gauge the hire by looking at it from differing viewpoints. I am cautiously optimistic; I see some things for concern and see some things to be excited about.

I REEAAALLYY hope this constructive dialog continues as it's enjoyable & worthwhile (relative to what I *could* be doing...)

Something ive been wondering is that if these guys are good at recruiting and building players up. Then why didnt they have a more consistant W/L record. When you look at some of there losses there almost as mind numbing as some of ours. This goes back to the whole premise of this idea that we hired a nice guy to unite the fan base and bring some order back on the sideline. But if your going to do that then dont say hot button phrases like money is no object, or were here to win championships. Or have your new coach give the lip service that hes here to win championships or he respects the tradition. Some of those to me are just lip service and the more i rewatch the presser the more i think he was just giving the fans a line. Im sure everyone wants to win championships when they take on a job. But you need to be able to position yourself with the people who have the ability to help you get to those things and his DC hasnt cut the mustard in OSU so that would lead many of us to believe he cant cut it here. This isnt the Pac10. There are big big boys up here that will push those guys around if they dont have the right leader.

What some of you guys are doing is placing us in the were only mad because Bo is gone. Thats not the issue, the issue is that we were told one thing and something else entirely different happened. Our new coach made it appear that he was going to surround himself with people that would help him do better at his job. And it seems that he is going to bring a good portion of his rag tag gang of buddies with him from OSU. These are the issues not anything to do with bo or any of the other staff. If these guys were cutting the mustard at OSU they should of never lost more than 6 games a season. Nebraska at its worse in recent history has never lost more than 5.

My last point, despite what anyone on here thinks of me, i respect this program. I have grown up with Nebraska football all my life, and have taken great grief from many folks in iowa because of it. I would never wish any harm to be done to the History and the Honor this program seems to have. Thats why i didnt like callahan because he hurt the history, thats why i didnt like bo because he hurt the integrity. Mike Riley has the ability to bring those great things back, but he is doing exactly what most were mad at pelini of doing. And thats why some of us on here are very upset because weve been given the lip service before. Take what i said for whatever its worth is to you.

 
No, I think concerns about Riley are valid, and shouldn't be automatically thrown aside. I was very negative on him the day it started, but I've warmed up to the guy. He seems to fit well.

He's bringing over a part of his staff. Now, I'm not too excited about the DC, but that DC also has an excellent rep outside of these past couple seasons. But, I wouldn't mind seeing him shake it up a little. Still really want Orgeron.

I think it's true, it's kinda concerning that his teams don't have more wins. However, he seems like a Dan McCarney type, he could get a lot out of players, with average recruiting it wouldn't be enough to make a great team, but a good team.

Also, you'd have to imagine Riley would have to be realistic at Oregon St. He wasn't going to get 4 and 5 stars regularly. That's ok.

 
I think a certain amount of the disappointment is fair, too. We're Nebraska, right? We want to be the Alabama or Ohio State or Oregon of the world again. If we got Jim Tressel (or for the sake of conversation, Urban Meyer), you know it'd be happening. The entire football world would be put on notice.

It's the same disappointment when Michigan doesn't get Les Miles or Jim Harbaugh, or when Texas didn't get Nick Saban. The coup of coups -- it rarely happens.

... because there are a lot of idiots on this forum... Tressel was a fantasy... and Frost would have been a huge gamble. At least Bo had considerable experience in the role of DC. Frost is still on Helfrich's short leash. He's little more than the Papuchis of Oregon (albeit with a much better mentor).

I'm sorry, while we have the fortune of a few decades of great history (you know, Minnesota once had that too, before most of us were born)... we're no Alabama or Ohio State. There's no Saban or Meyer who's going to come on board here, because they know they can't recruit to the level they need to easily win here.

That said, Riley has done some noteworthy things, with a team which is another notch, or two... below where we are, in terms of recruiting appeal alone.

I would FAR rather see an experienced coaching staff (far more experienced than Bo/company), one which has so much respect, they were even considered by a number of elite programs, one which HAS won games against top 10 opponents, with inferior talent, a history of identifying/developing that inferior talent into NFL drafts, etc... I would much rather see them come on board at Nebraska.

They could be a flop... every new hire is a crap shoot. But I like the odds way better, than some of the numb skull suggestions that so many have suggested here.


Now Riley is going to bring on/retain the guys he's comfortable with, thinks can get the job done. I'm pretty certain, he knows far more in what to look for in terms of qualified candidates, than anyone here. I suggest everyone buckle up, take it all in, and hang on for the ride.. all the whining/complaining/second guessing in the world, isn't going to change the outcome.

Assembling a staff is tough. It's not just as simple as hiring the best recruiter at each position. You assemble dream teams in between seasons in free agency on your Xbox. In real life, Riley probably isn't comfortable hiring a lot of guys if he doesn't know even if they are fantastic coaches. The guy DOES have to assemble a staff with some semblance of chemistry, after all. He needs like minded guys working towards the same goal.

Very excited about our new coach!

This is true, however, that guy has recently expressed interest in coming here and coaching for the team.

Otherwise hiring coach Riley and him transferring the OSU staff here isn't bringing us much closer to a conference championship, let alone competing with the best teams in the country. I don't see us competing with Ohio State anytime soon unless better players are brought into the team.

I agree with your post except the bolded. Saban and Meyer would have no problem recruiting to Nebraska. If Saban can recruit to Tuscaloosa he could recruit to Lincoln, and Meyer could do the same.

I take issue with that one sentence. This is not the pros.

As far as the negativity, welcome to the internet. I was a negative Nancy when I heard the news, however I will support this new coach, however I wont change my sig, I might eat crow. I did predict would be hard as heck for Bo to get 9 wins this season and turns out thats all he will get!

I think Riley realizes this. I was watching some of his stuff on Youtube and watched his press conference following the Oregon game last week. He does a great job in general, but really talks about the importance of recruiting while avoiding coming right out and saying his players aren't good enough, which they most likely aren't to compete with Oregon.
