Hypothetical question for those who live in Nebraska.

I think that Nebraska is a lot like the state of Alabama when it comes to football. There is no professional teams in either states. But Alabama has 2 universities, Bama and Auburn who are in state rivals. Would you support Nebraska having another D-1 school with a football team that would play the huskers every year. Let's say that it is U.N.O. Would you support this?? Why or why not??

No because Nebraska is the major college program and would always win. It wouldn't really be much of a rivalry because there wouldn't be much competition. Nebraska is the football team for the entire state of Nebraska. There wouldn't be enough support on the other side.

Alabama's population is over 2.5 times what Nebraska's is. (~1.7 mil to ~4.4 mil) There are simply not enough people to support TWO schools of UNL's size IMO.

If another school, like UNO were to somehow become that big that would be a different story. And although I am sure student population is increasing, they are a ways off from being Division 1 in football IMO

It'd probably be a giant waste of time and money.

Like huskerdude said, there would not be enough support for another football team.

People in Nebraska are known for the Huskers. I don't think anyone would ever recognize the other team and it would eventually die out.

There is legislation before the Alabama state senate to have the state offically renamed AUBURN, since we are now the dominant football program here :clap :worship

We have to deal with moeron bama fans on a daily basis. Trust me when I say you do not want another school :thumbs

I would have no problem with UNO becoming a Division I-A school. I do think Nebraskans, especially those in Omaha, would support the team, but UNO and NU would never be rivals and obviously the Mavs would never receive the support the Huskers receive.

Another school couldn't do anything in Nebraska imo, especially UNO with all their problems. Not enough support, not enough money.

I could see UNO becoming D1 AA and hopefully in the future would be scheduled to play NU every year. And all it takes is for them to beat NU once, then I think the support would come.

:yeah D-1aa no problem, don't got the budget or support that NU has
They are going to be I-AA in the next couple of years... it is pending right now.

"Q: Nebraska-Omaha has been embroiled in controversy surrounding a large budget deficit in athletics. It has become so heated that the University Chancellor, Nancy Belck resigned, and a local politician is recommending UNO to leave the NCC for the MIAA. What is the likelihood that UNO will become a member of the MIAA? Higgins: The Vice-Chancellor resigned first, followed by Belck. Right now the MIAA option looks very likely for the short term while UNO tries to get its act together again. In the meantime South Dakota’s Task Force will recommend in December to move to D-I, and Augustana makes a tough decision to make the jump also or join the Northern Sun. However, UNO will struggle more trying to have success in the MIAA. The NCC is a far cry competitively from its glory days and the MIAA has strong teams in most sports."

The NCC is going to break up anyways....with NDSU and SDSU already gone and UND not far behind there is really no sense to keep the conference going. Morningside left a few years ago, Mankato has been trying to get to D1-AA for a couple of years now. The conference is horrible now and will never be as strong as it once was. Where would UNO go? Is it even possible for them to go D1-AA? Do they have the facilities right now or planning on building the facilities? Could they make it at D1-AA?

Another team could not be as successful as UNL. There is a reason we don't get any franchise that would even look at Nebraska as a possible location for a sports team. We do not have the fan base nor the resources to support a team. It is unbelievable how well we support UNL and the money we pump into our program might be the tops per capita in the NCAA.

There is only ONE school in Nebraska. THE University of Nebraska. Good luck trying to find a fan base.
Uh, one minor correction. The are all part of the University of Nebraska now. The one with the really big thing about red is The University of Nebraska Lincoln. :)
