The kicker is a JUCO, he isn't coming to sit the pine with just 2 years left. He will play in some fashion and most likely got some assurance from the staff before he committed. The number is 4, will be 5 if they grab a JUCO LB.

Correct, but he is getting an academic scholarship. This means he does not count toward the 85, unless he plays in a game. I would almost guess that he might have a redshirt left, which means he would not play until 2016!

I did a little search on Sutcliffe. He used a redshirt at Utah and played to years in JUCO, where he kicked & punted. There are financial packages that do not qualify as a school scholarship and academic scholarship rules are grey due to the if, and & buts. I am not specialist on this, but I read him as a walk-on that does not count, unless he plays and then not until the following year. This is a good insurance policy.

I would be interested seeing what gray areas your finding, because this is pretty well sealed down by the NCAA. Your are correct that he won't count until he plays, however he is a 2 for 2 guy and isn't coming to sit. Assuming he accepted the academic scholly, he will play and count this year so he makes the attrition number needed at 4. Again that is assuming he accepts the academic scholly and that all current schollies were renewed. If they get a LB this year the number is 5.

I still think they would use him somehow, maybe as the kickoff guy like Bondi. It is possible that he doesn't play, I am just having a hard time seeing that when he is a 2 for 2 guy that the staff recruited here. I can't imagine either party would have agreed to him coming here if they didn't think he would add value through his play and if he didn't get a really good indication that he will play in some type of role. Who knows, this is all conjecture though until we know for sure that he accepted the academic scholly.

He starts as academic walk-on & plays, he does not count until the following year.

I guess that doesn't make much sense to me - except LB, of course.

 
We have to have several leave to even be able to take anyone else for this fall.

But we hardly lose anyone in the secondary even after this year. And we seem to have a lot of talent there already.
