Class Size

Just curious with all of the recent players leaving the team, how many players do you think we will take in this class? Do you think it is increasing or that we stay around 20?

Riley said on Big Red Wrap-Up the class is about half done. He said he prefers to fill half the class before the season starts and half the class during the season because a lot of guys emerge their Senior year.

Not counting Terry Wilson, we're at 14. 28 seems high, but maybe it's not too far off the mark. He did say "about" half.

I think they were looking at 23 or so anyway. I would guess that he expects Collins to declare for the draft as he was just rated the #7 overall NFL prospect by ESPN. And of course there are going to be a couple of transfers now that the players see where they fit with the new coaches. 28 does seem like a lot but not too far out there.

Talan is gone which probably adds one more for 2016.

Don't forget we awarded four junior walk ons this year scholarships. Assuming they retain their scholarships next year that is four down.

I thought we would take 25. Minus 4 walk ons and add one for Talan would be 22.

Just my guess......

Also we could over sign 3 again as well I believe. Not sure if we will though.

Don't assume the walk ons will retain their scholarships. Those are on a year-by-year basis.

I think Riley will sign up to over slightly over the 85 scholarship limit, and count on attrition from some of the older guys to get back under 85. This past year, a lot of people were worried about NU being over the 85 scholarship limit entering fall camp, when there ended up being a number of guys leaving the program to get well under 85.

By my count, we have 66 players currently on scholarship who would be eligible to return next year. That number could go down if a couple of the walk-ons don't get their scholarship renewed but for now it sounds like they'll all be on the field - except for Fyfe - so I would think they'd keep them.

That would mean we could sign 22 which would put us at the 88 limit. Plus any attrition between now and then. We currently have 15 commits but that number will probably drop in the next week so 8 or so more.

two players have told me Malik has already said he is going pro after this season.

He does have a kid so the opportunity to go early and provide for his family will be tough to turn down.

If he is going to be in the first two rounds, I would advise him to go pro. Gotta get paid!!!
