3rd Quarter Scoring

Ok, so I had some extra time on my hands and went through the box scores of each game from 1993 through 1997, and from 2004 through 2006.

Granted, the 1993 - 1997 years yielded 3 national titles, with Oz at the top of his game and his most talent-rich. 2004 through 2006 was wholesale regime/scheme/recruiting change from top to botttom.

During that span, Ozburn had 50 of 63 games, bowls and CCG's included, where NU scored in the 3rd quarter. That's a 79.37%.

2004 through 2006 yielded 23 of 37 games, bowls and CCG's included, where NU scored in the 3rd quarter. That's a 62.16%. If NU scored in the 3rd quarter of EVERY game in 2007 (14 - assuming we win the North plus the obvious bowl bid) , the total percentage under Callahan would still be just over 72%.

An interesting note: 2006 was by far the WORST for scoring in the 3rd under Callahan - just 5/14. '05 was 10/12, and '04 was 8/11.

I'm NOT bashing Cally - perhaps I should go back and compare the numbers from 1973 - 1975. But his teams haven't shown that fire in the 2nd half (with some exceptions).

My point being, Ozburn knew, no matter what happened in the first half, he had to re-establish control in the 2nd half. I don't know if we're seeing that consistently yet.

If we score in the 3rd quarter 11 games out of 14 in 2007 (around 79%), we'll do pretty well...

Weak 2nd halves plagued the Huskers last year. They need improvement in that department badly. I think it comes from Callahan not making adjustments. His 1st half plans usually worked pretty well. But then it all fell apart in the 2nd half (KU, OSU, MU wasn't the greatest 2nd half, Texas A&M, Auburn) and they didn't do so well.

I wonder how many of those non-scoring Osborn quarters followed a severe beating during the first half and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team replacements.

There certainly was room for 3rd quarter improvement but overall we out scored our opponents 428 to 256 last season. Our quarter breakdown was 117 - 135 - 49 - 120 (OT 7). Although we didn't score as much as I would have liked in the 3rd quarter I wonder what the TOP was for us in the 3rd compared to our opponents TOP.

Also keep in mind overall we did out score our opponents in the 3rd quarter last season also. (49 - 46) So things are not really dire. Especially with almost our entire offense returning and our offensive line much more experienced.

We also scored like 40 points a game during those years... call me stupid, but dont high scoring teams tend to score more, no matter what the quarter? How much did those Osborne teams score in the first quarter? I bet it was 100%...

Hi,

Apples to Oranges. You compare pretty much any team to NU during that time period and you'll see similar results.

i agree, this isn't about the "kids not wanting to be champions", that's crap! this is again about coaching and making the adjustments. too often cally made the wrong adjustments, going away from what was working, trying to out guess the opposing coach. most of the time it blew up on him. old coz just had no DB's to cover and had to play conservative, he really had no choice, but cally's 2nd half play calling was pitiful!

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH

Stop looking for someone to blame as there isnt any blame here at all.

We struggled in the second half because of Zach Taylor, PERIOD.

Now i love Zach, but the facts are simple, he isnt all that good. In the first half we were able to do a lot of things offensively because of game planning, but the second half was different because every team we played came out and said the same thing. YOU WILL NOT RUN ANYMORE, TAYLOR IS GONNA HAVE TO BEAT US. He wasnt able to do so.

What adjustments were we to make, we had a nice QB thats it, but when it was called for, our nice QB couldnt win games.

The Big 12 championship is the best example. Stoops said it himself, they were not gonna let our run game beat them, it was gonna have to be through the air. Time and again Taylor's throws were late or off.

Zach was wonderful for our program at a time when change was happening but he certainly was not the answer. If he came here this year and entered the QB competition he would finish 3rd behind Keller and Lee.

Instead of blaming Callahan we need to look at the positives. He was able to take a very average QB and make him the Big 12 offensive player of the year.

I'd say Hats Off to a masterful coaching job.

Leave Cally alone, if you want to criticize, get on Coz
