Shatel's article on Pederson

I remember being on the side lines when I and my best friend used to get in with our knot hole tickets, right there with the team. No one one ever told us we had to leave. I remember us running down the side lines yelling some body tackle him. That was the Air Force game when everyone thought that the play had been blown dead and the Air Force player scored and we lost. That type of freedom is gone. I understand the need for the changes. The world has changed and so have the people in charge of the program and the university. I say let them do what they think is best for the program as long as they keep trying to improve the athletics and education that they offer. We are one of the top schools and we know that nothing will get by some of the people on this board if someone stumbles <_< .

Any time someone says we are just a football factory and that their schools are much better because they also push academics you should see the look on there faces when I can tell them how many Academic All America athletes have come out of Nebraska's different team sports and how far behind the next team is.

I think things look bright on the horizon :)

When we win a national championship again there will probably be people still pissed off that we didn't do it running the option. Things change get over it. Of course I should just go talk to a wall because some people seem to be happy bitching and moaning about anything and everything they can.

I noticed a thread about reviving the NU/OU rivalry here awhile back. Isn't a chance with this current bunch at the helm. Nebraska Football of old, is gone. Sad, but that's the way it is.

Steve offered to be interviewed as a response to the piece but when he was told that there were other issues they wanted to discuss with him, the gutless worm Pederson declined the interview.

Hopefully Perlman gets rid of him and can bring back some Nebraska to NU.

Shatel's column is just that, a "column". It's not a news story and he isn't required to contact sources/subjects. His column is his opinion, that's it!

It was one article from Shatel telling us the way he perceives it is at NU. I didn't know the situation was like that and I take the article as opinion mixed with truth. Pederson has done a fine job of alienating fans cause he has distanced himself from the people whose support he desperately needs. When is the last time he said something other than "the athletic dept. has no comment". Shatel should have asked Perlman to check if all the female students on campus afforded the same security? This is not a response to 9/11, these changes came in the last 9 months and no one until now had the nerve to ask why.

 
coyeote, the lack of continuity certainly isn't a bad thing. When a coach has a chance to further his career at another school, you never hinder their chance of ultimately becoming what they want in their career.

When we hired John Blake, he stated from day 1 his ultimate goal was to become a HC again. After the debacle at Oklahoma, he felt like he needed to prove he could be successful on this level again. By taking an AHC job, instead of a position coach, he got one step further to what we all knew he wanted the day we hired him.

With Norvell, we knew the same thing as well. Every year we heard how he was a head coach in the making, that it was only a matter of time.

To me, it was simple why Norvell didn't get a HC gig this season. When interviewed, I'm guessing the question of playcalling came up quite a few times. We all know Norvell only gameplans, by doesn't call the plays. Guess what hindered him from getting jobs at Iowa State and BC?

By going to UCLA and becoming their playcaller, he furthers his career to become a HC.

I'm with you in a sense that I wish this was the golden days when coaches showed loyalty to one certain school. Coordinators would seemingly spend a lifetime at one school and be happy. But unfortunately in todays world, everyone wants to be a head coach. So in reality, turnover occurs at every school, not just Nebraska.

As far as Doak, I have chosen not to get involved with alot of what he has said. But for the guy to constantly bring up such things at every chance, only to bash the school he supposedly 'loves' tells me alot about the type of character he has.

Did he deserve a reason for the firing? Probably. But he just needs to choke on his sour grapes instead of making this into a bigger thing than it is.

From my understanding, he should be grateful to be around as long as he did. If not for his good relations with most Husker players, he would've been gone quite some time ago.

For what it's worth, my sources tell me that Pud is pretty much untouchable. He's too well connected. I believe his dad is or was a State Senator. From what I've been told, it will have to get a lot worse before his job will ever be in jeopardy.

I remember one afternoon, playing a pick-up game in Memorial with some guys on my floor (Abel 6) with T.O. jogging around the field.

I had new tennies and tried to make a cut and almost tore my ankle off..T. O. stopped by and said I "might want to get that looked at"..I answered something incoherant like Cliff Claven on "Cheers" talking to a pretty Girl.

Agreed, the staff that Solich was saddled with was a problem in itself. Not that Solich may have done any better with an entirely new staff either but the time had come for a good house cleaning.

Some fans have grown up on coaches that were hear since they were kids and they struggle to relate to the new staff or to feel like they still understand the program and the philosopies of the staff. Change is difficult for many. Even more difficult if the changes are wholesale across the board. Again a good housecleaning was in order. There will always be a bunch of what if's but the staff that we have is headed the right direction.

Coaching is a tough job and yes the days of an assistant staying put for 25 years are gone as is the days of a program staying with a coaching staff for 25 years. In this day and age the schools are always striving for being better. If you have a run of several 1 year losses then chances are you're going to get fired because you can't win the big one. That's just how it is. How many people were calling for Mack Browns head and will be again in a year or two? Tough job but that's why the get the big bucks.

I agree 100%, Just like us FANS arent GOD and we dont need to be contacted, kept in the loop, or told about any and all things involved with the program

 
Steve didn't and doesn't have to defend himself for every move he makes. IMO this is one of his weaknesses and something he needs to be careful of. Fighting with boosters and writers in the newpapers is counter productive. He wasn't hired to hold nanny boo-boo confrontations with the press or boosters. In fact he need these people in his corner to help make this work for us. Surely he has to see he is further alienating more people in always feeling the need to defend his actions or lack of.

Shatel wrote his piece, did his job. Got a great deal of controversey and sold some papers. Pedey should of had nothing to say and if so hold a pow wow with Tom and OWH in private. Not in the public pulse. Didn't help matters any IMO and came off as childish.
