Brainwashing can wear off, or maybe it never stick to begin with. He was basically a janitor before he saw action, maybe he never bought in and said eff this when actually called to duty.

Not buying that. They raised him basically from birth. He had literally no one other experiences. Brainwashing not sticking would just make him a vegetable.

From birth was nevere confirmed. He could have been an older orphan that never saw them as a trustworthy caretaker. We also don't know what tactics the First Order uses to push their agenda on orphan Stormtroopers.

Obviously seeing Kylo Ren murder some people and give the order to take every innocent bystander out was enough for him to see they were bad.

Hey what was the deal with that Stormtrooper who had the extendable gadget thingy that fought against Finn with the lightsaber? We've seen lightsabers deflect lasers and cut through solid walls, and now a random Stormtrooper has a weapon that can stop it?

Guessing the staff uses the same kind of crystal technology that a lightsaber uses. Would be a simple desdign really since the old death star used light saber technology.

There are energy weapons that can block/counter a lightsaber. The stormtroopers weapon had some type of blue energy field on it.

I was actually reading something online that talked about Finn's falling out with the First Order.

I think everything you mentioned, Redux, played into his defection. But also, according to some Star Wars story lines not included in the movie, the Stormtrooper who dies early on (and led to the bloody hand mark getting placed on Finn's mask) was a friend of his. Apparently, Finn (on numerous occasions) had helped that Stormtrooper complete training exercises until Capt. Phasma stepped in and basically told Finn the First Order is only as strong as their weakest link and to no longer help that other Stormtrooper.

So, that Stormtrooper then dies on Jakku, clearly affecting Finn. He is then told to mercilessly kill innocents.

Combine all these factors, and perhaps a reluctance even from a young age to completely buy into the First Order, and you get his character.

Exactly. He obviously had some disdain for his Captain which ultimately led to his defection.

Good article talking about why I feel the way I feel about this movie. I disagree that it "stinks," but it's a terribly flawed installment in the franchise and it doesn't bode well for future movies that so much of it was recycled.

I'm with you.

I really felt the movie was mediocre. The acting was pretty good from the two new main characters, but the humor was out of place, the plot was stupid, and the bad guy wasn't scary. He lost to a noob Jedi. The movie is entertaining, but it currently holds considerable critical praise it doesn't deserve, and can't hold a candle to a movie like Sicario.

I would retort the humor was right on par for a Star Wars film, the plot can't be stupid if it is a carbon copy of A New Hope and Kylo Ren wasn't meant to be scary.

Since we all have a voice on the internet, a lot of people will unduly criticize something just for the sake of standing out, even if the overwhelming consensus of professionals and people who know their sh#t agree about the quality of something.
