What I would say to that is, my goals are the same as the fans, to win a national championship. But that is a process and winning the North is a part of that pro­cess. You have to go through the North to put yourself in position to win bigger things. That’s how the conference is aligned now. It’s not what it used to be, in terms of an eight-team conference. The competitive landscape is much different than it was 10, 15 years ago.

It's a fact. You have to win the north first. Then the conference. Then you need everything to line up right for a national title. I don't really think there is satisfaction in only winning the north. Winning the north last year was a building block, it is not the only goal year in and year out.

 
i was going to say, isn't that the goal for last year? But, yeah winning the North is just a stepping stone for the "big" goal. Then again when was the last time we won the north?....old debate, i'm over it :)

 
My only problem is that it is the one goal that is continually said.

I think everyone here can follow the thought process that this (the North) is needed to move on to the conf. etc,

In a perfect world it would go without saying.

Like I said, it just grates at me.

 
I thought it was a great article. Shatel asked pretty strong questions. I found the 5 second then up to the coach ofc "Tunnel walk" very interesting. Shatel did sneak a dig there with his "Yes, there is progress going on at the Osborne complex these days" line. It also provided us with a look inside of BC's world by describing his office.

I didn't have much of a problem with what was asked by T.S. or answers by B.C.

I did shake my head at the USC game plan part. I still don't see the lets pound it on em and lose going away plan was the right thing to do. I'm going back and thinking the last few times USC was beat it wasn't because teams pounded the rock for 4 qtrs on them. Rather have heard Bill say well it didn't work quite the way we planned it. Take some of the responsibility of the loss and then add had we executed as planned it might of been a different story. Anytime you lose by 18 going away (USC was knocking on the door at end of game), I'm sorry ... its not a great plan. Anytime you lose... you can always say well we didn't execute. I will say this though... okay you seen it didn't work last yr... don't make the same mistake and be hardheaded this next time around. He will need to be more flexible this time and do a better job of keeping the Trojans offbalanced with better play calling. He did take full responsibility of the fake punt that didn't work vs Auburn.

When he pulled out the binder and quoted qtr by qtr stats it didn't provide me with any answers. It still didn't address the question of why we have low output after the first half. Once again he pointed to lack of desired execution but nothing about failure of making better adjustments after halftime. Something in my mind that needs to be better in the future on both sides of the ball.

I did wish Tom had addressed the special team play situation and asked what measures will made to make them more "special" in fall camp.

Overall it was a good Q & A session. Now can we get TS and SP together for a down to earth, no punches held, hard hitting session in the near future? Now there would be some great reading...

The stats answered quite a bit for me. 4 turnovers on the first drive of the 3rd quarter. Missed FG. 6 times the opponent started with the ball in the 3rd quarter. More or less Callahan's answer was we lost momentum for one reason or another going into the 3rd. The admited lack of execution in the second half makes adjustments about meaningless. It doesnt matter what the play is if the reciver drops the ball, or someone fumbles, or blows a block. The two previous years, we played better in the second half than the first. Really makes me think more execution than adjustments.

It would have been good to have Shatel ask about the special teams, but I do remember Callahan making a mention to the return game being a focus in spring ball, and looking at a few of the new arrivails as return specialists

Duh! His goal is to win the national championship. Winning the north, etc are steps that need to be taken to reach that goal. You have to reach the little goals first before you can reach the big one. Obviously the team last year wasn't capable of reaching the BIG ONE.

 
It was a very insightful interview and I'm liking Coach Callahan more and more. I do hope he has the opportunity to stay for years which means he'll be WINNING.

I'm sure he was tempted to slap the stutter out of Shatel after the Lucky question.

My point, of course, is that all anyone hears is the goal of winning the north.

I don't hear that, apparently, I don't count in the 'anyone'. Primary goal, win the north, secondary goal, win the big 12, main goal every year, win the national championship. You can't reach the final goal without getting the first goal. I can guarantee that no coach or player is satisfied with just winning the north. :bang

 
:bang This board is rife with people selling short (and with good reason mind you) the likes of ISU, KSU and CU. There is reasonable respect for KU and MU. Those teams with Nebraska make up the North. Given the past record that Nebraska has had against every single one of those teams, it is pretty easy to say that the North was an afterthought for a great many years. I listened with half an ear last year that winning the North alone was a good goal because it hadn't been done in a few years. But, guess what? If your primary goal is to win the conference, then it must have meant you won the North, and had your eyes on bigger and better things than the JV division. :madash dedhoarse

After winning the North last year and reaching the Big XII Championship not winning the Big XII this year would most likely be a disappointment. ;)

 
i think what most folks are driving at here is this.

winning the north, absolutely necessary, a big disappointment if we don't win it every year, from this point forward. no good excuse for NOT getting this accomplished.

winning the big 12, time to start getting this accomplished or being damn close to it every year, from this point forward. eventually, this too should be consistently achievable, or damn close to it, every year. if your program is as good as you say, you should get this done at least 3 out of a possible 6 years, consistently, 50% of the time, minimum.

anything over and above that is truely gravey. it is very hard to get beyond that point and being a true national contender every year.

you need a top notch recruiting program, depth and truely above average talent, coaches and damn sure a bit of luck to go along with all the above.
