It looks like the coaches prefer to hand the Blackshirts out as a group, even if a guy is suspended for Game 1.

I tend to agree with this line of thinking. I don't mind the starting nickel and dime backs getting Blackshirts. That's something Bo used to do.
It seems like Banker also gives Blackshirts to senior leaders on the D, see Rose-Ivey and Weber. I do realize that those 2 will also get plenty of PT in the LB rotation.

Personally I think it should happen in fall camp before the first game.

Being handed out right after the end of Fall Camp and at the start of the first game week is when McBride always handed them out because that is when the Starting D is published so HCMR is following what many see as the "right way" to do it.

Maybe I should clarify....I still see this time period as being part of fall camp. As long as it's done before the first game, I'm good with it.
