The benefit of having all three branches (actually, just the Executive and the Legislative is enough, usually) of the same party is that it presents the opportunity to push through legislation that would fail otherwise - and is the main reason we see historic (which is not necessarily the same as "good") legislation.
The detriment, of course, is when that legislation is bad, such as the Patriot Act.
Having the Executive and Legislative branches representing different parties may prevent the passage of society-altering legislation; conversely, it also protects against abuses of power.
Guess it depends on whether you want the security that opposing parties brings, or the ability to push through significant change (for good or bad).
All I know is this - no matter which party's member is elected to the Office of the President, it will be an improvement...

As long as proffesional politicans are in there it doesn't really matter. They all make mistakes and look out for the man.

to the extent that eithe party can control the judiciary, it will be a long time before the democrats "control" the judiciary. look at the u.s. supreme court, the ages of the justices, and who appointed them....

Term limits and moral/ethical rules that actually mean something. I truly believe the founding fathers are shaking their collective rotten corpse heads in disbelief by what the Federal Government has evolved into. A couple of words come to mind BLOATED & UNACCOUNTABILITY. I don't think that either party has a solution to the horrendous amount of money wasted each and every year. I don't think that "By the people and for the people" is foremost in their (guvmint) minds. Sorry me dun
