Cally on hot seat

Here's all I had to say

We went from getting beat by 60 points by a ranked team and losing to a division 1-AA team, to beating 2 teams in the top 25 and almost 3 (Iowa State, Michigan, Texas Tech) the next year, to beating 2 (or 3?) teams in the top 25, and losing 3 games to top 10 teams by a total of 19 points...

Seems like if we improve the same amount going into 2007, we will end the season with a BCS-bowl berth and a Big XII Championship, not too much of a hot seat position
Enlighten me on when NU lost to a "division 1-AA team" lately <_<

Weak stuff Trev. Cally needs to win the north? Well duh, he did it this year and our goals are obviously going to get bigger than that. We may be a bad road team, but IMO we have been much better on the road than in the previous few years. Cally just isn't on the hot seat for me.

Well now that I think about it I am not so sure. I was speaking of Southern Mississippi, but I guess I was most likely wrong and they are just a low-level 1-A

I'll play along :hmmph

If there are only two reasons Callahan has a 'free pass' this year, these are it...

1) The 2008 Recruiting class. Could end up being his best ever. Regardless of what you want to say about how much top recruits affect the actual season, this could be the start of something big. Yeah, it's been said for a few years now, but seriously, this class could just be what develops Nebraska into Nat'l Championship territory...IF it pans out.

2) A horrendous schedule. Callahan isn't likely to be punished for this season. I mean, look at what there is...A decent Nevada squad that almost beat Miami last year, a Wake Forest team on the road that is coming off an 11-3 season, Not alot to be said about USC obviously, playing at Missouri, Texas, and Kansas, how has that fared lately, and always an intangible with CU.

Now saying that, this shouldn't be an excuse for 'conservative' play and losses that just shouldn't happen (see UT 2006 and TT 2005) It is time to turn some of those around!

Foppa,

I think there are still quite a few of Franks kids here. 9-10 that play on a regular basis. No slap against Frank, they are pretty good players.

But they tie up slots that could or could not be better filled.

I am not knocking any of the players by any means, but it appears BC's players are a little more in the mold that he needs. A few more high level athletes might make a difference.

He has another year before we can say he is on his own. 5 years, like I have been saying since day one. After that, I will not be handing a free pass...

You can not blame the coaches for Texas or Texas Tech losses. Those both should have been wins for this program, and would have done a tremendous amount of good. Fumbles are the game of football, but no coach can be held responsible for those things happening. Kids trying their hardest to please the coach and us is all that can be asked. Mistakes happen. I will never hold that type of loss against this staff or any staff. Tough luck. We have had our fair share. I remember a season where we had the luck, TO was given a NC because of a very lucky kick. You have to take the good with the bad.

I agree there is no way that BC is on the hot seat.

With his recruiting and the stride this program made from FS to BC this quickly how could be be on the hot seat?

Stride? What stride? We haven't improved from the Solich era one bit.

As far as the question the thread starter posed, Callahan SHOULD be on the hot seat, but I don't see Pedey firing him.

We've improved in recruiting, that is a small bit.

edit: actually, it's kind of a big bit, imo

Recruiting doesn't mean jack squat if it doesn't translate to wins.
I'm confused. Recruiting DOES mean jack squat regardless of whether the entire team wins or loses. You have to have the horses, period. It's not like if the coach doesn't win enough games with high caliber athletes, he'll just say "Well, that didn't work. Let's see if Joe Blow wants to play."

Now I'm confused too, as I don't understand where you're going with that. True, you're not going to win many games if you have lousy players, but talent doesn't win games by itself. Look at Mack Bown, he gets top shelf talent every year and he only has one Nat'l title, which he wouldn't even have without the gift from God that was Vince Young.

I don't see all this recruiting magic everyone is trumpeting. First of all wins and losses do matter. Ask Notre Dame's last coach... he recruited pretty well too. Also, after seeing so many players getting all this hype at recruiting time, I take it with a grain of salt. Not all that glitters is gold. We have lost over half that ballyhooed class of a couple yrs ago. So with all the hype and hoopala over recruiting... remember we have to keep em happy and win too.

You can have all that excitement over a couple of recruit classes. Besides, it didn't take highly rated recruit classes to have the team ranked highly in the past. Myself... I get more excited over ranked teams and BCS bowling. So while BC isn't on the hot seat, there will be more pressure in the next 2 seasons to get us back to being ranked among the nation's best. I say the book is still out on him until so. Losing 5 games a yr doesn't fly long around here.

What I am getting at is that you HAVE to have top shelf players. It's one of the ingredients to make a good football team. Obviously there is more to it, like leadership from the players themselves but to discount the value of recruiting is a mistake.

I think everyone is taking this a little too personal. What the author is questioning is whether or not NU football is better now than with the current administation than it was with the previous administration? To everyone else besides Husker nation who really don't follow NU football, you have to remember how they gauge success. They gauge success by wins and losses. Just using wins and losses, it's easy to see where the author is coming from. We are seeing less wins and more losses with the current administration. It doesn't matter the reason from tougher schedule, change in offense, etc. This isn't how the rest of college football thinks because they simply don't follow the changes and things going on here in Lincoln.

I don't think he's on the hot seat yet, but just like the author said if we get beat 50 to 7 by USC then I think the seat gets a little warmer. I think when KU beat us a couple of years ago the seat was luke warm. If we get blown out by any team this year, then I would have to say he might be on the hot seat. The sad part is I don't think any of us can really expect a whole lot for at least another 3 or 4 years. We have a one year QB this year playing his first and only year at NU with a fairly tough schedule this year. Next year, we're going to enter the year more than likely with an extremely young and inexerienced QB. It took even the great Tommie a year or two to be molded into greatness.

I think Fulmer at Tennessee is probably on one of the hottest seats this year. College football has become about what have you done for me lately? Just as Coker. No one cares whether or not you have a NC trophy or not. They just care about when you're going to win them the next one. If Lloyd Carr has a season like 05, I think he gets fired at the end of this year despite what he accomplished in 06.
