Yeah I mean, he's a kid who made a decision, right or wrong. It happens, I can be empathetic to that.

I just worry that our staff needs to set a little bit of precedent. This is the second year in a row we've been burned like this. Either jump on board or don't, we can't keep letting kids do this stuff. Calvin is a good player and I would love to have him, but he's not Joseph Lewis, Tyjon Lindsey, or Darnay Holmes. He's replaceable. I say if you want to commit that's great, but if you don't then fine, let's move on and go after one of the many other guys around the country with a similar skill-set. We spend so much time on guys like this and then they leave us with our **** in our hand. Totally fine with spending time like that on 5* guys, they are game changers, but to commit so much time and energy to a guy like Calvin to have him leave in the end is starting to hurt us. Again, not saying I don't like Calvin and wouldn't love to have him N, but we can find others guys to fill his spot if he is flaky about his commitment.

But we really haven't been burned by anything. We still have a chance to get him.

Lindsey picked a different school earlier and now is reconsidering us. Not the same situation but only the timing really matters.

 
I think it was Schaefer that said it, and I totally agree.

If Nebraska wants to be well respected nationally, you entertain talking to Calvin again... at the risk of looking like complete idiots courting the guy who just spurned you on the largest possible commitment stage he could have.

Would I take Jamire? Absolutely, he's talented.

Do we look like idiots if we don't tell him to shove it? Absolutely.

 
I will certainly be disappointed if we make him our first home visit after the dead period (as I read somewhere this morning). That coveted spot needs to go to someone we're trying to woo, not someone we're trying to woo back.

I'm not sure it makes us look as stupid as it does desperate. Top tier programs wouldn't entertain you after flipping your commit on a national stage like that unless you are a game changing prospect. Although talented, Calvin is not that imo.

At the same time I can see the notion that we're not a top tier program and we can't turn away talented players. I don't necessarily agree with that notion, as I think there are already guys comparable to Calvin that we have a shot at. Hawkins is the first one to come to mind.

I actually do trust the coaches to make the right decision on this one. I think if they do visit him again they will be confident they can get him back, they know what it would look like if they visited again and he sticks with OSU.

The Hawkins visit this weekend makes things very interesting when our coaches will be in to visit both Lindsey and Calvin before then. I would assume they push for a commitment from Lindsey pretty hard. Then, tell Calvin...."Hey, we got a guy coming in this weekend that we really like also. If you're happy with OSU, then so be it. But, if you want N, you better jump now."

 
I guess I'm not trying to be hard on him personally, but I'm wondering what was it about Oregon State's offense that swayed him so much. Lots of players are talented, but some of the more talented ones might be at a point where they need to figure out their plans a bit more than others, who might completely understand and buy into the offense and the role they're signing up for.

Nebraska doesn't have the luxury of having too many players just figuring that out here, either. It's just something that I think adds a little to the risk of a player panning out here (not by talent, but by fit/being happy/right style of play, etc). And recruiting always includes an element of risk management.

 
I don't think Riley is nearly as cynical as some on here, even if I do agree with most of you. If Calvin expresses regret, and wants N, I think Riley would take him (Lindsey, or no Lindsey).

I seriously think it had absolutely nothing to do with their offense or their program. There was something that happened that week that made him switch. Obviously, I don't know what that is.

 
Ah, I see. I was going off some mystified recruiting reporters going over his comments on Oregon State's offense and how they used their receivers. I suppose it could all just be the sort of things you say when you commit anywhere.

 
It's hard to say what's going on at OSU. Andersen wants to run an uptempo style offense similar to what the Ducks have ran recently. I think that's his selling point as he's got 7 WR verbals. That said, he has no QB who can run that system and the Beavs were heavy on the run this year because all they have is a good runningback.

And it's not always about football. OSU is on the west coast. It's far from LA figuratively, but only a 3 hour flight or so. It's also a beautiful campus. Throw in promises of early PT and being able to travel to LA for games against USC and UCLA and it's not really a hard sell. We have tons of Californians up here.

He was about ready to uproot his entire life and move far away from home for the next 4-5 years. At the last minute, "cold feet" set in, which happens to all of us.....and if you deny that, then I am sorry that you have never had to make an important decision on your own before....good luck when you do......

At the last minute, it becomes overwhelming and the idea of staying close to home with your best friend sure sounds safe and great ! Once you have time to take a deep breath, re-evaluate the circumstances and re-assure yourself about your initial thoughts, then things become more clear.

For all of you people saying....."wishy-washy"....let him go elsewhere if he doesn't want to be here..... CRAP !

Get a clue on how 17-18 year old kids think and then look at buying a house half-way across the country and move away form your computer out of your comfort zone......then don't have any hesitation when a the it's time to leave......now add a national tv audience...

Let the kid make a decision without badmouthing his decision.

Yana Johnson, Calvin's mother, told The World-Herald Wednesday that Calvin's recruiting process isn't over despite the dramatic announcement on NBC. NU is not only in the mix, Johnson said, it's where Calvin prefers to attend. Calvin, a slot receiver at Los Angeles Cathedral High School, is currently committed to the Beavers, Johnson said, in large part because he's trying to consider his family's ability to attend games.
“His heart is with Nebraska,” Johnson said. “He wants to go there.”

“It's something we're trying to work through, how we'd be able to travel for the games,” Johnson said. “It's not personal. It's more of an issue of how we are going to get there. If we can't go see him play in any games, then what is it all for?”
