“I think that we have to be very, very concerned and thoughtful about our growth and make sure that that’s happening,” Riley said. “I think that we need confidence, and I also think that we need to be mentally tough.

“So the combination of those two things are going to be really important to the growth of that group. That group is talented and experienced, and still yet, has to grow for us to be good.”

When asked to follow up on his comment of being “very, very concerned” about the offensive line, the third-year NU coach only slightly changed his tune.

“Did I say ‘very, very concerned?’ Well, I think our concern is that we want to and need to find paths to grow,” Riley said. “We certainly want to be better. You guys know where we were offensively a year ago. You know what our goal was running the ball and where we ended up…

Riley may be letting Cav have a heads up, on what he will be paying most attn to this year. Last year was the D. So Cav may be on a real hot seat. I hope he gets his recruits playing tougher and smarter. I think Riley only has two years left, to show what he can do. Unless this year is a total meltdown.

GBR!!!

Problem is the schedule gets tougher with each year. Our new D and our new QB will need to be a smash hit to get us to much less over 9 wins.

I am trying to find the article, but I'm pretty sure he said that defense and special teams needed to improve at about this time last year. They didn't. Those guys are gone. At this point if you are on this staff and you don't meet his expectations, you have to realize you won't be here long. Riley and the powers that be aren't playing around with that.

No reason Cav should have been retained for this year IMO. And unfortunately, I think Riley, the fans, the RBs, and the QBs will be disappointed and very possibly hurt. Hope I get to eat crow, but not seeing it.

Cavs oldest recruits are, what, redshirt freshmen? Give him time to fill in the gaps and utilize the talent he's bringing in. He's proven to be a pretty good recruiter so far. Can't rush the process.

To be fair, injuries make this an interesting case. A healthy Gates, Foster, Farmer, and Knevel could become a pretty decent line. However, all four missed games and played injured.

when they were healthy they weren't in the top 6 of the big, no excuses

Why is it impossible to coach any players except your own recruits???? That's a bunch of BS. If you can coach you can coach. It shouldn't matter if they're his recruits or not. I'm sick of that cop-out excuse. Coaches coach, players play. If the players aren't buying in then put in the ones that are. But even if they aren't buying in they should have at least gotten some better if the guy can coach.

Agreed. I will be pleasantly surprised if we see even moderate improvement this year with the oline. He might be able to recruit but it doesn't matter if he can't coach.

Is it possible Riley could add a GA who knows what he's doing to help coach the line?

Yep, and that is the main reason I am remaining in Riley's corner. He has proven he will make changes where they are warranted and it doesn't matter how good of a friend or how many years the person has worked with him. Due to the Pelini years and the resistance to change, we kind of forgot that's how it's supposed to work.

Yep. I'm concerned about coach Cav , but will keep my glass half full because of Riley's changes. It seems like it has been forever since we have had a good to very good O line not to mention a great Line. Fingers crossed.
