If Riley goes 4-8 this year and ADSE is forced to make a change he will. His tenure will be decided by the replacement he chooses.
ADSE already fired the last coach and hired Riley. His tenure is attached to Riley.
No, it's not. At least it doesn't have to be. If this year starts really badly and he makes a move mid season he will easily save his job. He was brought in to fire Bo and change the culture. He has done that.
Ultimately, SE was not hired to fire Bo and change the culture. SE was hired to grow the brand and success of Nebraska football.
And to do that...

Not if Riley "retires" from coaching. This way, the ADSE can save face and hopefully not make another poor football hiring decision.

Potentially, but a lot of perspectives and factors would be at play if say Riley finished under .500 and then decided to retire. Ultimately, SE would still have been responsible for the current situation. The most important job of any UNL athletic director is the sustained success and progress of the football program. Most other things are irrelevant by comparison, and many fans (if not most) would gladly sacrifice success in other sports and areas of the athletic department in exchange for football success.

Yep..

I think Riley is the type of guy that would "retire" to help out SE

Regardless of when Riley's tenure here ends, it will be a retirement. Whether that is of his own choosing or a agreed upon suggestion is irrelevant.

Optimistic. Can't you guys just enjoy the season, and stop worrying about how to get the coach out the door before practice has even started.
One can be optimistic of the fun that will be had while watching games and following the team and pessimistic of the final scores of those games at the same time.

Why would Riley retire? Unless he/SE agree to a settlement of his buyout, retiring would cause him to lose millions of dollars

This already happened.
Not really. He easily gets a pass if Riley fails if the guy he replaces him with is a splash hire.

It's all about the big picture here people.

I'm sure Eichorst could kick him a couple million $ if Riley chooses to "retire". Maybe that was an agreement with Riley coming to NU in the first place.

You're assuming ADSE would be around to pick Riley's replacement. IMO if Riley can't get it done, then ADSE didn't get it done either and needs to go. Get an AD that can hire a winner. If we don't have confidence in MR, why should we have confidence in the guy that hired him?

The two are not a package deal. This line of thinking is not how it works.

The guy who hired SE is gone, though...
Don't take this the wrong way as I'm not asking it in an adversarial kind of way (even though it always sounds adversarial

) - what's your point?

SE's greatest security blanket is Riley's success. My point was that Eichorst was going to do what he felt was right to grow the brand and success of Husker football when he was hired. His job status is going to be heavily dependent upon decisions related to the football program.

But it sometimes does and it has happened here. It's not a very black and white situation. SE's future at Nebraska is more tied to Riley's success than it's not.
