Husker Chalk TalkConcept Wednesday: Slot Fade

RedDenver

Heisman Trophy Winner
Exactly six days left before kickoff, so I suppose it’s time to fire the Husker hype engine back up.  We’re going to tweak things a bit this year to save me some time, hopefully resulting in more content.  First, the Charting posts will no longer be an every game thing.  Instead, though I’ll still keep the chart for every game, I’ll throw a post up every third game so we can get an idea of Nebraska’s offensive trends.  Second, I hope to get a Concepts post up every week where we’ll take an individual look at Nebraska’s favorite offensive concepts and how they work with current personnel.  Finally, I’m always open for guest posts.  We ran a couple last year, but I’d really like to focus on them more this year.  If you have something to offer, let me know and we’ll work it out.

With that out of the way, let’s focus on a couple things I’ll be looking for early in the season from the Husker offense.  I know, I know, handsome Bob Diaco is the real offseason story.  We’ll get to him soon enough, but I think people are selling the offense short this offseason when they shouldn’t be.

We're an injury and a weed bust away from having good depth.
I don't know if Keyshawn Jr. was being counted on playing this year by the coaches.  He wasn't a great physical specimen when he came to NU, and the health issue he had before coming to NU further put him behind.  He was probably going to redshirt this year, before he went back to Cali.

There's always the option of removing a redshirt if need be. Without him here, that's not even an option.

Whoever this guy is doing this coverage, he is good.  He noticed the same thing in the spring game that I did.  They were doing a lot more pulling than they did during the 2016 season.  I knew it was low,  but 5% is really low.

Great detail really helps explain why he is expecting certain results.  I enjoy reading it as I generally just sit back and take in the game from a high level so I like it when  person takes the time to walk through the details.

I think he maybe the receivers will be a little better than he suggests and he doesn't seem to mention the running game.  I like to think the passing game will be as good as he indicates and this will make the run game much better.  I see no drop off in the talent level in the back field as the marginal improvement of the three returning RBs will surely make up for any slight talent differential from the loss of Newby.  The O line should be some better as they are almost all returning and should be in better shape and stronger and more experienced and more mature.

There is just very little reason to expect Nebraska to be anything less than better than last year in my view.  All indications are they will be.  The quiet confidence and hard work and conditioning are just one big factor.
