I saw something like that reported right when the news first broke as well.

Although there's a lot of latitude in that.  Being "on the autism spectrum" covers a lot of ground and isn't necessarily relevant.  Though I'm sure the intent to deflect would be.

Monday evening, his attorney asked that the family’s privacy be respected “during this difficult time.”

“Jack is an amazing boy whose compassion, character and giving heart are admired by his loving parents,” said the statement from attorney Sean Brennan on behalf of Eichorst’s family. “His autism has never slowed his passion for life or his trust in others.”

This has a very 'Kevin Spacey' feel to it. That may be totally unfair to say but it feels like a deflection.
