Marlon Lucky

Junior running back Marlon Lucky sat out Monday's practice for precautionary reasons and will hopefully return today, Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said.

Lucky “took another shot” in Nebraska's scrimmage on Friday, Callahan said.

i don't think this is an issue of durability as it is...NOW THESE KIDS AREN'T AFRAID TO LAY THE WOOD! :bonez

It's hard to say he hasn't lived up to expectations because the only expectations he needs to live up to are his coaches. You could say it's the system. Look at the Denver Broncos. I could run behind their line and gain over 1000 yards in a season. Look how their backs fair when they're traded to other teams. Obviously, BC is going to continue to shelve 3 to 4 talented backs at one time. Obviously, they're all going to share time throughout the season. More than likely, we're never going to have a back that has the numbers backs here used to because plain and simple they won't ever see the ball nearly as much. This is due to a more balanced attack plus the fact of sharing playing time with 1 to 3 other ball carriers per game.

Will Lucky ever have heisman type numbers? No. He just won't ever see the ball enough to have them. Will any NU back put these kind of numbers up? No. Same reason. BC has a real knack even if a back gets into a rhythm to continue rotating them. I see at least one of the freshman backs making it into the rotation for the 07 season. The 07 schedule if a difficult schedule. There are some potent offenses we face. Unless the defense can get many 3 and outs, our offense won't have the ball as much therefore cutting down touches by the backs.
Corey Ross got almost all of the touches when he was a starter...... <_<
True, but that was early in the BC era. That year, Tierre was moved to defense. BJ was injured. Glenn and Lucky were true freshmen. We don't have that anymore. We have Lucky, Glenn, Culbert?, and a couple of freshmen. I don't see anyone of them getting over 15 touches a game.

I love watching Lucky catch a quick pass just over the line while he's running full speed. I'm hoping he's going to be a big impact player this year. I don't expect him to take on folks he can run around. Not that kind of runner.

I think the four RB rotation was just to keep guys (mainly Lucky) happy, cause lets be clear, Bjax was a much better RB than the other three. Now that its just esentially Lucky and Glenn with everyone else just there to sub for injuries, you will see Lucky get the ball as much as his body can handle like Ross did.

hype = fan expectations which is largely subjective.

It would be interesting to see some statistics comparing 5/4* backs in their sophomore years, keeping in mind that these kinds of comparisons are still open to question. I'm not sure if there's somewhere we could get that kind of data already assembled, but maybe there's somebody out there who is really bored at work and could assemble such info. :)
I pulled the stats of Lucky and Jamal Charles of Texas a few months back in a thread when Charles was listed as a Heisman hopeful and there was no sign of Lucky listed anywhere. Lucky had less touches than Charles, higher ypc, 1 less TD, but more total yards. Charles was a 5 star running back and a top 5 running back recruit.

I think Lucky will be fine. It is not his fault that he was awarded 5 stars, so he should not be held to a different standard that he either "hasn't shown that he deserved being a 5 star yet" or when he is successful; "finally, it's about time that darn 5 star started playing like it." In some people's minds, he is going to be a bust even if he does have a monster year this year because he didn't produce a ton of yards immediately and had to share the load as a sophmore.

Lucky took another shot on Friday and missed practice both Saturday and Sunday. If things keep going the way they are Lucky will never get a chance to prove he's a five star running back. Also Prince is now taking snaps at running back. Sooner or later one of these new guys is going to step up and leave Lucky in the dust.

not to be nit picky but NU didnt practice on Sunday, however Lucky did sit out of practice on Monday and Glenn missed practice as well

Exactly. He has played pretty well when he has played.

Hype. A 5-star that was touted as the next Reggie Bush needs to blow your mind from the beginning.....not play well when he plays.

Why does he "need" to? Like DJR said it's not his fault that he was rated with 5 stars.

In a lot of cases, I think recruiting services put unrealistic expectations into fans heads. Sure, you are going to have a freshman here and there that really do "well". By well I mean what Joe Fan thinks is well. But when you look at ALL the freshman every year the percentage of those types of players has to be very, very low.

I'm gonna be nit-picky! NU didn't practice Saturday...they did practice Sunday! There is a huge difference!!! ;)

he has now sustained two pretty tough hits in practice, that we know of.

this is NOT going to help his confidence when we open the season.

it might not hurt in the long run, but short term it is not going to be positive. some guys just expose themselves unnaturally and end up being more of the victim of injuries than others......Lucky could be one of those guys.

a lot of guys are going to get "looks" at RB. there was a reason Culbert was moved to RB late last year.

the guys doing the hitting are practicing for a starting spot, sure can't blame them either. i think we will likely see a 3-4 back rotation again this year, as we just haven't found the durable, explosive back we are looking for. Castille, IMHO, is our best shot although not the fastest of backs either.
