Willie Hampton

Wow. He was probably in my top 5 favorite recruits that Riley brought us. Felt he was severely overlooked and that he would be an ideal 3-4 ILB.

I haven’t heard much about where he was sitting on the depth chart but I don’t love our LB depth as is.

Frost, and the rest of the coaches, must have a plan because LB is one position where NU is pretty thin.  So to let a LB go means they either have someone who they think is better, or they're counting on a true freshman coming in.

It is interesting...this staff is having players move on if they don't feel they fit--rather than just keeping them on as a body.

Pure speculation on my part, but I think we will no longer be able to complain square peg in a round hole with this staff.  IMHO, Frost and Co have a clear cut vision they are sharing with the players.  The reality might be the brutal honesty of you not fitting our vision.....

Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.  Glad he gave the Huskers a shot.

But, they need bodies.

Literally,  who is going to play all these snaps? They must have confidence in what they have.

Keep in mind that this decision might not be up to the coaches. Certainly could be a situation where the coaches and Hampton came to a mutual understanding after meeting together and Hampton saw the writing on the wall.

Maybe things will become clearer in the coming months, but this feels like bad attrition as of now. It’s not like Hampton had been recruited over by younger players yet and I think he would have given Honas a battle for the starting job, especially when Ruud has singled out Avery Roberts as a player who needs to do more.

Another possibility...maybe NU on defense isn't going to play as much 3-4 as we think.  They actually might be (personnel wise) more suited to a 4-2-5 set.  Or perhaps they'll run more of a Bear 46 front with 1-2 LBs and the rest will be CBs and Ss.

:dunno
