Three & Out

Teafatiller suspended: Husker tight end Hunter Teafatiller’s name was noticeably missing from the depth chart Tuesday.

On Wednesday, coach Bill Callahan said the junior who caught four touchdown passes last season is suspended for Saturday’s opener against Nevada.

Teafatiller had a couple incidents this offseason. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Aug. 4.

On May 26, Lincoln police ticketed him on suspicion of DUI, negligent driving, improper registration and minor in possession after an accident that caused $5,000 damage to his SUV.

He joins wide receiver Maurice Purify sitting out Saturday for disciplinary reasons.

On the topic of Purify, Callahan said the senior returned to Lincoln on Monday and has been practicing since Tuesday.

Purify went home to California to be with family after an older brother was shot and killed.

Young’s emergence: Redshirt freshman Dreu Young said he was about five days from committing to play for Colorado School of Mines.

Then the phone rang. The Nebraska football team was offering him the chance to walk on. A kid from Cozad doesn’t easily turn his back on that.

The move has seemingly paid off. On Tuesday, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound tight end was listed third on the depth chart behind J.B. Phillips and Josh Mueller, both seniors.

“Last year, he came in, he was a guy that was a little bit light for a tight end, but he had all the skills,” Callahan said. “He had the frame to be a good tight end, and he put on additional weight and strength.”

Now, along with Teafatiller and redshirt freshman Mike McNeill, Young is regarded as one of Nebraska’s best receiving threats at the position.

“The one thing that sticks out when you watch him play, he’s got downfield speed,” Callahan said. “He can stretch the field. He can make plays.”

By the numbers: 335

The number of pounds a Nevada defensive lineman will have to deal with Saturday if Matt Slauson has his say.

The junior right guard returned to practice Tuesday after being out with a shoulder injury suffered on Aug. 17.

“It’s really good,” Slauson said of the shoulder Wednesday. “Whatever (coaches) want, I’m ready to go.”

Scouting report: RB Quentin Castille

Lack of confidence is not an issue when it comes to freshman running back Quentin Castille.

Someone asked him one of those general “what are your goals for this season?” questions after Tuesday’s practice.

His goal, he said, was to rush for more than 1,000 yards.

Someone later tried to compare him to teammate Cody Glenn as a freshman — that is, the type of running back who might come in on short-yardage plays and lower his shoulder into a linebacker.

“I don’t compare myself to him. We’re two different guys,” Castille said. “He’s like a bruiser-type back. I’m a bruiser-type back. I guess I bring, not a lot more speed, but a little more speed and a little more finesse to the game, too. If I get in on short third-down yardage and I get the first down, I’ll be happy.”

The LaPorte, Texas, native stands 6-1, weighs 235 pounds and likes running into people.

Given that he was listed at No. 2 on the depth chart behind Marlon Lucky, Castille might get his chance to do plenty of pad banging Saturday.

“I just like being the bruiser,” he said. “You do it once or twice, ain’t nobody going to come your way the third or fourth time.”

Opponent watch: Wake Forest

He wasn’t listed as the No. 1 running back on the most recent depth chart, but senior Micah Andrews will start for the Demon Deacons in their opener at Boston College.

Andrews was a standout for Wake Forest before tearing a knee ligament three games into last season.

Though sophomore Kevin Harris was listed No. 1 on the depth chart, Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe told the Winston-Salem Journal: “We feel like Micah is ready to go and as much as anything deserves a chance to go. ... We’re going to try to see if Micah’s back.”

Micah was a starter and team leading rusher until an injury sidelined him last year. Watch out because he is a quality back, but only if he is fully recovered. Micah's father, William Andrews, was a leading NFL rusher during his days with the Atlanta Falcons, when Steve Bartkowski was the starting quarterback, and June Jones (current coach of Hawaii) was Bartkowski's back-up.

That should be a good test/show of how this new D-Line is going to perform. I'll venture to use the word 'stud' on Micah Andrews if he is healthy. We'll need to be ready to stop the run, going into the game with USC and their 9-deep at running back.
