Tyrone Williams shot a guy and Osborne hid the gun from the police.
Riley Washington faced attempted murder charges while at Nebraska.
Abdul Muhammad was shot in the butt as a result of being a gang banger in Compton.

OK, can someone explain to me how assistant staffs in basketball usually work? It's obvious in football. Each staff member is assigned to coaching a specific position group or is a coordinator for one side or the other.
In basketball, that's seems to be much less organized.
When I read the link I posted above, it spends all the time talking about what a great recruiter he is. OK..that's important, but, what does he actually coach?

Basketball teams in general are much more cohesive than football teams due to their size. There might be coaches that tend to work specifically with bigs but a lot of the coaching that is done is focused on 1. Bringing in talent 2. Teaching that talent how to improve (new moves, footwork, etc) and 3. Film review. They also will scout future opponents and assist with game plans.
Head coaches will have schemes and communicate them but unlike in football where the head coach is more of a CEO and lets the O and D coordinators do their thing, the head coach in basketball a majority of the time is very hands on in practice. Assistants do a lot of one on one development work and run a majority of offseason items with the current team while head coaches tend to oversee things like scheme. For example, Kenya Hunter technically coached the “big men” when he was here- but he had no big men to really coach. It was about preaching fundamentals of post defense and developing the guys on the roster within the overall defensive scheme that Miles wanted to run. Craig Smith always was responsible for the offensive scout when he was here, and he was dang good at it. When Molinari came in we solidified good defensive scouts (Hunter helped here too) but we lost a lot on the offensive side.

OK...so, a HC does't typically hire an assistant with a specific set of coaching skills in mind? Meaning, is there typically an OC and a DC type Assistant on the staff?

Not necessarily. You’re only allowed 3 assistant coaches. Typically the head coach has a scheme that he likes to run on both offense and defense. Your assistants are in charge of preparing the scouting report and offering suggestions on how to best tweak and prepare your scheme for your upcoming opponent (We’re going to switch screens vs hedge vs go over vs go under, were going to run the offense through xxx player, etc). Some coaches might be placed in charge of certain areas of the scouting report (like Hunter/Molinari for D and Smith for O) but that doesn’t necessarily make them the “coordinator” of those sides of the ball for Nebraska if that makes sense.
The most important traits you can have as an assistant coach are recruiting, development, and scouting. Then its about recruiting the right players for your offensive scheme, developing those players skills to maximize their talents within your scheme, and scouting your opponents to maximize your opportunities and exploit their weaknesses.

Low character and kids that have made a mistake are different. You sound like you want to win without tradition & class! Sorry I do not agree with you!
Osborne hid a gun in his desk that Tyrone Williams used. Christian Peter sexually assaulted a woman and Tom wanted him, Peter and the woman to talk behind closed doors. Damon Benning had a third degree assault citation. Riley Washington was practicing with the huskers even though he was charged with attempted second degree murder. Abdul Muhammad fought someone outside a convenience store. Reggie baul stole a woman's wallet in a Lincoln restaurant.
Those were a lot of issues between 94 and 95 but we won and Osborne gave them second chances. If Hoiberg gets low character kids and wins then all is forgiven. You're the perfect example, you hold the 94 and 95 teams in high regard even though we had a lot of character issues!
