took a week off after Wake to get some perspective

All that really happened yesterday is that USC showed us that we are not ready to play for an NC yet. Did anyone really truly deep down think any differently. Yes it would have been nice to compete a little better. Yes it would have been nice if our defense showed up. But we aren't there yet. Hopefully we'll get there -- I truly only have two opinions as to what is lacking...

1. You can't run for 31 yards against the nation's best and expect to beat them (unless you are Hawaii or Texas Tech). We do not seem to have made progress in this area in the last several years and, IMHO some changes need to be made. Potentially we just can't "get" the zone blocking. Leave this up to the coaches.

2. We are not, and have not for the past several years played championship caliber defense. What were we ranked last year, 56th in the nation in total defense? That is not going to get it done. I don't know what's wrong, so once again, have to leave this up to the coaches.

On several occassions I have called for Coz's head, but then I remember the late 80's and early 90's when our defense looked pathetic against the faster teams. Charlie changed schemes and philosophies, so can KC.

Our season begins now, we can still make it to a BCS game (which is progress in my opinion), we are just going to have to show marked improvement (hell it will have to be a night and day difference) to beat a scarey good OU team in the Big 12 Championship.

I guess what I'm saying is that this loss is not unexpected and it is not the end of the season or even the death blow to some coaches. We can still have an excellent season, but it is up to the coaches and the players to make that happen.

I agree with pretty much all of your post, but the defense the last 2 years has ranked in the top 25 in points allowed per game, which is essentially the most meaningful stat when it comes to defense, IMHO.

Your right this game wasn't then end all games, but just a preview of things to come.

Mizzou, UT, TA&M, OSU will light us up if we play "D" like that the rest of the year.

Hell USC didn't even run any misdirection and made the Blackshirts look like fools.

I didn't know that stat, and yes, I believe that is the most important stat. Stopping someone from scoring is what you're only goal should be on defense.
